Actually lily pipes are meant for cosmetic purposes, alot of successful aquascaper doesn't use them.
But its simply nice to have the "glassy" feel![]()
Aquascaper?
just curious if to increase oxygen, arent the outlet rainbar can position upwards and push the water at the surface to produce aeration ?
Yes you can create vortex and surface agitation using lily pipe.
The function of the lily pipe is to disperse the water flow, thus slowing the water movement some what. Placement of the lily pipes sometimes create a vortex effect at the lily pipe output.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.
Mohamad Rohaizal is my name. If it's too hard, use BFG. I don't mind.
At present I am not using any canister filter but only HOF.
For canister filter, putting the spray bar at the top and aiming it to push the water at the surface to the whole surface area of the tank should maximise the rate of oxygenation of the water column.
This is what I do with the outlet of my HOFs.
LIFE IS UNBEARABLE WITHOUT A FISH TANK!!!
If you are into planted tank, you do not want too much water surface movement. Surface movement will increase oxygenation but it also increase CO2 lost. You need to balance it out, you want surface movement but not too much.
Maybe with picture is easier to explain. Lily pipe will only aerate if its slightly above the water level. See all the bubbles?

if its submerged, the surface movement is very minimal. Only has slight vortex.
I'm not sure why some people are dismissing it as useless pretty glass. I'm not an experience aquascaper, but this thing clearly works as intended.
Can advice what is the preferred placement of the lily pipes? In coming water at the back of the tank and out flowing water at the front or the other way round?
in and out at the same side. The idea is for water to go around one circle before came back to the inlet
as long as on the same side, does not matter which one is in front or back?
Was just wondering if the lily pipe and the transparent tube connected to it will get dirty when algae starts to grow on them? Is it possible to get rid of algae in it since it is made of glass?
yes it will get dirty, you can easily clean it using flexible brush. Bleach will also work, just make sure to wash properly.
Will too much aeration increase ph?
