    Topping up with Ice Mountain

So I’ve been toying with the idea of topping up my 3.6 litre micro tank on my office desk with F&N Ice Mountain drinking water from the water dispenser, to eliminate the problem of chlorine and chloramine altogether.

Then I found that the typical analysis of F&N Ice Mountain drinking water, in mg/l, is as follows:

    Calcium – 34
    Sodium – 22
    Potassium – 2
    Magnesium – 7
    Sulphate – 4
    Biocarbonate – 124
    Chloride – 3

Is any of this harmful to aquatic flora and fauna? I have 5 neon tetras, 1 CPO, a marimo, and what I believe is an anubias nana in the tank.

basically just top-up, no water change?

if just topup, i suggest using distilled water instead. what evaporated is just H2O, everything else remains in the pico tank.

if for water change, you still have to add anti-chlorine to counter the chloride exist in "Ice-Mountatin"

Basically looking at distil and mineral water. Distil water allows you to make adjustments. Else explore the idea of owning a RO unit. GC got Mosura RO Filtration $198, cost wise, recovery in 20+weeks or so.

Please take mineral and distill water are different unless you are going petrify your shrimps. If not distill water topup 5% of your tank w/c. When you just topup you are Infact accumulating minera. Also a RO/DI system is abit overkill. Even with 2x2ft I still drop into ntuc to buy a carton. Maybe if I multi tier like veggie or Eviltrain I might consider a RO/DI system.

I'd say mineral and distil water. Mix a bit of both. That would suffice. Like avex30 said, if you have a lot of tanks then consider RO unit.

Actually mineral will build up overtime unless water change twice a week like 2.5% to 5% if the load is not that high. Moreover his is a small tank I don't think mineral water is needed to mix sure distill with 1 monthly dose of mineral plus will do the trick.

If temperature going 34-36C in May? This is based on last year data only. I am expecting it to shoot up anytime to as high as 38C. I have been through 45C at Thailand before. I can tell you above 30C with very high humidity, even human also cannot make it. Later on evaporation would be like crazy. Hence on such occasions, topping with just Distil water might be wiser. I advise thread owner to exercise discretion over here. Main thing here is to monitor your water parameter readings closely for the next two months.

I kept tanks in office before too. As the air in aircon environment is drier, you still have to monitor water level. In Air con environment, evaporation is slow but there is still some form of evaporation. Back then, mine was a 1ft tank. Though minor, you still need to top a bit. Given the micro tank, active monitoring and user discretion is advised. In one office is a planted tank with different communities of fishes and yamato shrimp, in another a LuoHan tank. : > I very greedy hor? But that was in the past...heh..

Adding distilled water is a better choice for pico tank in office environment.

Oei Oei...don't tempt me with Aro. I just might get one you know? Lol...then there goes my would be breeding space which I haven't decide what to try breeding...lol. Water change, plant fishing (fish out the dead one, the broken off one, plant back the float one)...back breaking stuffs back then, always stay back after work to do it...

Okies, don't OT too much. I'd say take your readings and exercise extreme discretion when topping up.
