    Hi Guys,

Need some input as to which would be a better choice to cool a 1 feet tank.
Currently have an average temperature of 28 degrees, looking at <25 degrees. Any recommendations?

Saw some mixed reviews on the ice probe, wondering if it is really that inefficient at cooling?

Reason why i'm comparing these two is cause the price is about the same (SGD 300ish).

    Thanks!

Neither. The ice probe will consume too much electricity while having minimum cooling effect as it is a peltier I believe. The HS28 will need quite high flow to run it and as such a tornado in your 1footer. Maybe you can look for a smaller chiller like a hailea 100?

As mentioned, with the size of the tank, the only kind of chillers available to you are the ones employing peltier/tem technology. These chillers work by drawing heat out of your water column using electricity and are limited by the ambient temperature of your room. I think I've read some people in sg using the ice probe managed to bring the water temperature down by about 2-3 degrees.

The pricing is about the same like you confirm but due to the reason for the tank size if you have the intention of a chiller why not get a bigger tank. Maybe space is a issue but it is better control over alot of things. If you're putting it in office than you need to open it when AirCon for office is off than maybe you can consider ice probe.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies, i'm currently housing my shrimps in my room's table so kinda have some space constrains. So was actually considering an Ice probe, but it seems that it wont be very effective if it can only bring down the temperature down by 2-3 degrees which is similar to the fan i'm currently using.

Any bros here has personal experience with Ice Probes to confirm this? My current ambient temperature is around 29-30 degrees, looking to get 25 degrees at least.

You're right. If ice probe brings it down the temperature between 2-3D, then a fan will suffice though topping up of water will increase.

If you have a deep pocket, then hailea will be the choice. I run fans on both my 2ft and 3ft. However, it's one of those humid months. Temperature hovers around 28-29. Fauna seems okay. As long as the temperature do not go above 30D, I'm content. But shrimps I am not too sure. No experience on their requirement.

Personally, in a month or two, I will be looking around for chiller for my 3ft. I want my fauna to be comfortable.

hmm.. looks like i will have to upgrade to at least a 3 feet if i want to even consider getting a chiller then.
Thanks guys for the valuable inputs appreciate it!

A 2ft tank will also work if that's an option. Common setups include 2ft tank + eheim 2224 + hailea hs28a.

    I actually have another tank, L33CM x M26CM x H41CM. Think they would work with a chiller?

Still slightly small for a chiller to work. I worry the flow rate will cause quite a bit of current in your tank. Perhaps if you diffused the current with a good lily pipe or a rain bar facing the glass.. Hmm.. Frankly, I wouldn't recommend it since the chiller would not run optimally on such a small setup. Thin glass, low volume = faster heat transferrence = frequent chiller kick-in = higher costs. Couple that with the issue of flow rate and it just doesn't make good sense.

okay, thanks for the advice vannel. Will consider upgrading to a bigger tank before getting a chiller in future.
