Some use Coral Shells, some use egg shells and some use CaCO3 for human consumption.

recently I notice my snails (big red ones bought from Bioplast) developing holes in their shells. I assume this is due to calcium deficiency? Shrimps also made a total disappearance. Fishes and plants seems to do fine. But would calcium deficiency lead to holes in OLD shells, or could it be due to acidity (did not test pH, lazy).
if calcium deficiency, how to supplement?

No Peter, it's the bigger tank. at first I thought “wow, the snails got nice pattern on their shell leh!”, then took a macro picture and view on screen and realised they are actually holes!![]()

Yup, eggshell will dissolve slowly in our acidic water. I used to throw in crushed eggshells before. The shrimps do go pick on them also.
I've seen those calcium tablets in pharmacies, but they usually contain other vitamins etc. Which ones are safe for use in the tank? Any brand to watch out for?

I use coral chips. There're cheap, supply good GH, and several other micro-nutrients.

i use calcium carbonate pills. the ones doctors give to old ppl. it contains only CaCO3 and vitamin D. Vitamin D, IMO, is a must as it helps in the absorption of Calcium.
