Just got myself a used Hailea-150A 1/10hp chiller to chill my 40x26x 29 shrimp tank. Since i do not have a canister filter, i had hook it with a 500L/H powerhead pump, temp set at 23degree. The problem here is the kick in and kick out seem to be very short. Kick out about 30secs and kick out about 16Secs. What could be wrong? Is the pump i selected too strong/weak? Anybody can advic? I do not have intention to upgarde to canister filter. Please help.

How old is your chiller? Your tank is small, 500L/hr should be sufficient, but powerhead might not be as good, it's better to use submersible pump. The kick in seems very fast means its good and maintaining the water cold fast, but how long usually does it takes to kick in? Normally the chiller will kick in for 5~10 mins for a 2ft tank in an interval of 45mins to 1hr can be longer depending on the environment temperature. But due to hot weather this days and you set to 23 degrees, it will kick in more often.

I have to advise that using an external pump without filter is not good for the chiller, as there is no proper filtration, therefore all the dirt will travel thru your chiller piping and reservoir and may be trap inside and cause your chiller problems in the long run.
Try to use a prefilter since you have no intention to get a canister.

Get a pre-filter and modified your chiller to a external temperature probe. You can google how to install a external probe, very easy job.

Hi Peanut8787 i just bought any external temperature thermostat. Can you help to explain this? I have set on the chiller to low 18 degrees in case the thermostat failed. On the thermostat i set the target at 24.5 degrees. When i put the probe into the tank the thermostat display show 27.1 degrees. At this point the chiller kick in and cool the down to 18 degrees (chiller display) and then kick out. When the temperature on the chiller rise again to 24.5 degrees it kick in again this goes on kick in and kick out until the display at thermostat read 24.5 degrees. Is this the correct way an external temperature thermostat works?
