The hairgrass in my tank seems to grow slowly. Is there any fertilizer that is needed by hairgrass to propagate faster?

I don't think so. I don't have problems, despite not even having any base fertilisers at all.

One tip, don't plant them too densely together or in too big a bunch. They tend to "suffocate", i.e., unable to absorb nutrients properly. This will invite algae attacks.

How far away should I plant them in order not to "suffocate" them?
    Thanks.

use 2-3 plants (yes, 2 - 3) as a group and plant them about 1cm apart. A little closer if you want the lawn to establish faster. This way, it will appear much more natural.

once the roots are well established, can give them a trim to improve growth. but it is very important not to plant them in too big a clump in the beginning.

When I planted them I use 5 per group and planted them 1 to 2 cm apart. It is one month since then. Maybe they need longer time to take off.

Trimming works? I may try that later.

I think they need longer time. I planted mine closer -- each clump about 0.5 cm apart. Also, I didn't trim them.
If you notice new plantlets growing, then all should be doing well.
