I've been using my canister for about 3months or so. I took the trays out aside and pour out the water into my bathroom sink. To my horror, I saw a huge bug (3-4cm), that look like a damselfly swimming around the water. I'm too shock to take a pic of it and could not stop splashing hot water into the sink to kill it.

I did not know when or how it end up inside my canister. Can it really survive as a tiny egg and grew so big inside a canister. At most I thought it will grow inside the tank but not inside a canister.

Might have been "imported" by new plants.

Likewise best check the tank now and the next few days. There's a few threads about it.

Lol!!! Too shock! Hehe. I was trying to imagine your reaction and feeling. That made my day bro.

I have fleas in my canister!! Oh okay nevermind they were from me feeding daphnia.

No worries mate. I concur with felix, it could have come from the plants you bought.

    Re: bug inside my canister

there's no plants, it's a empty tank with 5 fishes only.
I had xfered my fishes to a temp small little tank now.

Ya, i'm super traumatized and told my father about it just now. He said it may be a dragonfly too..
I still have the intention to upgrade to a bigger tank, now I'm not sure whether I can continue this hobby.. It's sick n gross. I'm a girl btw...

It's quite rare case to have dragonflies/mayflies to lay eggs on bare bottom tanks. Never less the nymph making it to the filter.

1 good point, your fish might have already made snacks from its brothers/sisters.

Good to see another sis in the hobby. Hopefully we get to see many pictures of your tank.

Btw: the use of sms lingos are highly frowned upon. There's a rule section, do read through and see what is acceptable & vice versa

    Re: bug inside my canister

I do have a self made plastic cover on top of my tank and there is only a small area which is not covered.
So I could not understand. Guess for the next tank, I will get a full cover to prevent this from happening again.
Glad it happened to my fish tank, and not the shrimp tank.

    Thanks!

    Re: bug inside my canister

While de-commission my old tank, I saw something wiggling. Knowing that I have remove all my fishes, nothing else should be inside. But well, to my surprise, i found this damselfly nymph. Around 2.5cm. Its been hiding in my gravel.

Actually, its rather interesting to find creature in a tank. Just a water body, can support so many biodiversity. They are not that harmful. My fishes all seems all right.

Hmm it you have no floating plants it is unlikely the dragonfly will go to lay eggs.

    Re: bug inside my canister

Nature is quite charm and leads to evolution. May be lack of breeding places to Damselfly female lead to lay eggs in fish tanks. Anyway they are not harmful. Next time try not to kill them. Fish lives co-operatively with many creatures in their natural habitats.

Not killing them doesn't mean letting them stay in the tank though. Do remember they eat small fishes, not harmful to you but not your pets.

    Re: bug inside my canister

I freaked out easily to bugs and my first reaction is to kill it I'm really brave enough to continue the washing when I'm still in a shock state.
My filter water is quite dirty and it really look creepy, big and disgusting to me Off side: When I stepped out of the bathroom, there's one cockroach crawling into my room. How bad can that night be.
It does look like the same thing as the picture above. I will not to kill it if it really happen again(rare but it happens!), provided I am not the one washing haha.

So if you're afraid of bugs, it's better to cover your tank!!

Bro, I just encountered a saga of dragonfly nymph. It just simply prey on Your shrimplets and give u sleepless nights knowly that your oh so expensive shrimps are so vulnerable. What I did is purely me and it may not neccesary be the best solution! I tear the whole tank down as i cannot bear the risk that more nymphs are there and I found more nymphs! I was glad I did.

Chose is yours. Mine was heavily planted and there is no way for me to ascertain the complete annihilation of them. U may be lucky there is only one. Decide and execute.

if there are no floating plants I think the fishes will eat away whatever small fries on the surface quite fast. Few years back I was chasing a cockroach and it dropped into my 4ft tank and my arowana just swallowed it less than a few secs.

Not all fish like to eat flies. Normally I don't see large fishes in planted tank and shrimp tanks.
Some bros in fourm breed flightless cockroach to feed some fishes. :btw, I fed I friend's Arowana with roaches before too. Very nice
