Malayan trumpet snail (Melanoides tuberculata)
These snails are mostly plant-safe, and make excellent scavengers, but usually need a fine substrate for them to burrow. These snails will spend most of their time beneath the sand/gravel, helping to aerate the substrate and prevent anaerobic conditions, emerging only at night when it's dark. They reproduce very well in an aquarium, but usually don't reach plague proportions unless there is severe overfeeding. They're safe with most fishes and shrimps as well, although they might get eaten by larger loaches or carp.
