Help! Gigantea over grown

I planted a bunch of Vallisneria americana (gigantea) at a corner of a 4ft tank last month and now they have grown to a lenght of at least 6ft long! The tip of the longest leaves have reach the other side of the tank. I have to tie them into a ponytail to prevent them from blocking the light.

What should I do with them? Can I cut the leave shorter?

Yes. You can cut the leaves shorter. But new leaves will grow to that length again.
The cut leaves will wither over time. You can also give a quick tug to such leaves to remove them.
When you have grown tired of doing this, then it is time to change plant.

I suggest you change to other shorter Valls.

I had the same problem and switched to a shorter Val.

I also have this problem. I have tried several Val varieties. Either they grow tall like Vallisneria americana (gigantea) or not tall enough like the Corkscrew Val. I don't know why, but these Corkscrew Vals don't grow tall in my tanks.

What Val did you try for your background?

Beside the Gigantea, I also have Vallisneria americana (natans). They grow tall as well but not as tall as the Gigantea.

I feel reluctant to uproot the Gigantea as it will cause the base fert to cloud water column.

That is only temporary. Don't you replant often?

Same here, I replaced with the cockscrew val and they are less than 1 ft long I have another species in another tank which has narrower leaves with brown streaks on young leaves which grows to about 1.5ft tall.
