actually FL is much better than PL. most disply tanks even Amano's uses FL as it has a better penetrating power. only problem, one FL can be replaced by 2 PLs.

pl retains intensity longer than fl and is more compact.
what do you mean by "only problem ..... 2 PLs."
Maybe he means the space occupied by FL is twice of PL???
I'm back!

Yeah again, I am quite surprised that Jewel tanks use so little FL but plants can still grow so well..
Other hobbylists still argue that PL is brighter in visual effect and needed for high light plants like riccia.
But I see riccia growing at Bio plast with just 1 FL across..
I really don't know how to conclude..BUT AMANO tanks use very high Wattage although using FL...so again...my head is confused!!
If the high wattage of PL is not needed. I would opt for FL as I save on electricity!

having low lights does not mean plants cannot grow well. they can grow well to, maybe slower. however, this does not apply to all plants.
depth of water does have an impact on light requirement, shallow water requires less light.
pl and pl light tubes uses similar technology. pl being a newer packaging (folded tube) is slightly more efficient and more compact. a 4’ long fl is 36/40w while a ~1.5’ long pl is 36w. so comparing pl and fl tubes having similar rating does not save you much electricity. however, using an e-ballast can save you up to 30%.
