Re: Air pump/filter for Tetra and shriimp

If there are no plants in the tank, not having any filter running will starve your fish of oxygen after a few days, or sooner. If there are plants, at least the creatures and plants can mutually supply each other with oxygen and carbon dioxide, but it all depends on the right balance. But even so, at night both may be starved of oxygen and as a result suffer gradual or rapid deterioration in their condition.

Thus to keep fish in good health, it is not good to go without a filter running.

How big is the tank in question and the exact live stock. If not over stocked should be ok.

Many folks have tanks do not have proper airstone, filter sometimes even water flow. I am
One example, myself with 6 tanks. No filter no air pump. But cannot overstock so 6-7 neons in 2 feet tank medium planted, 7-9 rummy nose in another heavily planted 2 feet.

Plants also respire and take o2. Happens at night.

Air does dissolve when in contact with water. For your case only have the water surface.

In a tank without a running filter, you will find that a tough ans stagnant film will form on the surface after some time, and as there will be no water surface/air active physical interaction, dissolving of oxygen willl not be able take place. The atmosphere merely being in contact with the surface does not mean oxygen will dissolve in the water. There needs to be a breaking of the water surface over wide area. So the only oxygenation will be from the plants. But it should be adequate if the fish are small and few, and regular partial water changes are done, eg every day or every other day.

Your plants are so lucky to get the nutrient-rich water.
