I suspect, since your Betta was sickly, he was being bullied by the Guppies and Tetras while you were not around.
The one thing I can't stand is fish bullying other fish. It makes me very angry with the bullying fish. I can usually
get rid of such bullying fish without much guilt, though only as a last resort. So I seldom keep fish which are territorial
    in nature with other fish.

The most peace-loving fish I have experienced keeping are goldfish and Cory Sterbais. These fish live their own
lives in peace and do not disturb others. But these fish live to eat, lol...

I never noticed that behavior...but I can't say it didn't happen. The guppies actually seemed to stay very clear of him. Maybe he was just a sick guy from being in a dirty tank for so long. I'm still just really sick about it all. Nevertheless, I am going to set the 20 gal up. Get it covered. I will research the breed you have recommended. Don't goldfish continue to grow as the tank grows? I can't imagine what the positive out come of that is if so! I will be at my mace with a 20gal so I need to stay with smaller fish sizes. I want them to have ample room to have a good habitat. And I have read that goldfish need much colder water than other fish as well. Hmmm so many decisions!!!

Betta are like little gangsters, i can't imagine he is being bullied by guppy and tetras... I only see betta chasing other fish around...

All fish jumps... i have several dried neon tetras...Sigh

the main thing is get a perforate cover for your tank, any you should be able to restart the hobby....

Gold fish are poo masters... make sure you have good filtration system and wash the filter wool regularly or your water will become yellowish very soon... of course gold fish does grow big, but if you only have several of them(less than 3 small size GF) should be alright...

Check out my Blog on planted tank, good for newbies ( i am lazy to retype all the info i know, so please click and read below link... i hope you don't fall asleep while reading)

Spent mothers day at new fantastic fish aquarium store a friend directed me to then spent night (after prepping the 20gal) transferring everyone over to the new tank once the water was warmed and primed and plants were set in place. Guppies and tetras are all doing great this morning! All are adapting quite well! Have new filter set up with the old filter so the bio is going to be going...added some extra substrate to the old substrate...all the old decorations...thought you all might like to see it! I am proud of my accomplishment! 13 new plants in all. A beautiful new landscape for my existing babes. All my girls are doing just fine. And all covered and NO ONE going overboard!!!! Poor Sweet Cheeks!

Nice. It's beginning to look like a breeding tank special

How cold was the water over your side before you warmed it. I can't see the heater :P

Well the heater is in there...hidden I suppose by all the vegetation...I have it at 76 F...it's what they have been in all along. I know guppies prefer cooler but I knew I needed to keep it the same. I have measure both tanks in various places before switching over and so far the move over seems to have been a success. I guess it will be some days before I know how everything really goes.
