You are simply doing the proper non-CO2 method without even knowing it.Fish poo act as fertilizers for plants and no water changes keeps the nutrients intact for plants to consume slowly..(very very slowly though). Its a method which requires some tweaking for the amount of critters to add so as to provide the right amount of nutrients in the form of ammonia (small amount in pulses) and later NO3. You only need to do large water changes if pruning/disturbing of the substrate is needed which will only occur in months.
