what is the size of your tank and how many do you have?
For cigar fish, you normally need 4 pieces so that they do not disturb other fishes.
I used to have 10 in my 5 ft and they never borthered any fishes and they are like 12 cm long.
I've also just got another 10 to put in my 4 ft today.
Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

You've been spending a lot of time on this fish across the various forums.
Anyway, for your benefit, here it is again.....
Annostomus ternetzi
Also known as cigar fish or black banded headstander.
Gan's Fish Farm has a recent shipment and they may still have about 100 pieces left. But you better hurry if you want the smaller ones. These fishes somehow sell out quite quickly.
Do take note that you normally need at least 4 pieces so that they do not disturb other fishes (just like tiger barb), unless the other fishes are very much larger then they are.

My Cigar Fish also biting the talk and fins of my Discus...only when see my mom or me with the Net than it disappear. As what some say, I need to put in more than 1pcs of Cigar Fish..is that correct?
Not only do they consume algae but I had seen them eating my tonina leaves. I have also witness them eating snails too. I have 3 in my 3ft tank.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.
Mohamad Rohaizal is my name. If it's too hard, use BFG. I don't mind.

Mine only bully those bigger fishes but all the small Tetras they just ignored them.
Put few Apistos in and it will check their Present hehe.
That my stupid opinion but it works for me it actually tame my Anostomus anostomus
I had a pair in one tank, but they bigger one kept going after the smaller. So I moved bully to my arowana planted tank where I'm having a small BBA problem. I figure its agile and alert enough. So far so good... after 2 days.
Frankly, I've watched it... its doing a good job staying out of danger.
Yeah, I saw it picking on a ramshorn too... but I'm not sure if it was after the snail or the BBA (black spots) on it.

My Cigar fish the tail and fin on are clear totally without the red marking. Got another Cigar fish that look just like yours and it's named Anostomus anostomus, same as what Plantas has.

Kingfisher,
You must be very confused by all the misleading information you have been getting!
As you have correctly pointed out, Anostomus anostomus has red markings on the all the fins, including caudal and dosal fins. The intensity is varied depending on water condition, as can be seen in the photos later.
Here is a line drawing with the coloration clearly illustrated
The following are photos taken of the first page of Google search engine when you type in Anostomus anostomus
Compared to the other fishes (labeled cigar fish) that we have seen lately, it's clearly different. Qian Hu is the only retailer that I am aware that's selling the Anostomus anostomus (at this point in time) and they do not call it as cigar fish. You were there just a few days ago and I believe you can verify this for yourself.
As for the fish in my picture, it's Anostomus ternetzi. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of good pictures on the web.
If you look carefully, you can clearly see that the fins are clear. However, the adipose fin and the caudal peduncle will show an orangy coloration sometimes. But the fins are clear and hence differentiating it from the other species, Anostomus anostomus.
Another important identifying feature: the black central stripe on Anostomus anostomus ends in a black arc at the base of the caudal fin where on Anostomus ternetzi it ends with a gold arc. Again, this is clearly illustrated above.
Hope your confusion is finally cleared and you got the correct fishes in your tank.
Have fun!!!
Cheers,

i have 3 small ones in my 2ft..not feeding them..and it seems they are not doing the job!!!!!!!!
Does the Anostomus anostomus eat BBA too? As efficient as A. ternetzi?

Looks like very much larger doesn't mean a thing to cigarfish. Transferred one cigarfish into the aro tank because it was bullying the other... Now it's nipping my aro's fins!!!
Will get a few more to distract the damn A. ternetzi.

Getting a few mor aro won't help. Don't use the A. ternetzi as an excuse to get more aros.
Most of those that keep them in a school of 4 or more usually don't have much problems. I'm sure there are exceptions. But most of those that kept only 1 of them always seems to have "bullying" scenarios.
However, in Gan's Fish Farm's main tank, I think he only has two, but he altum angels still have beautiful fins. In Choong Sua's tank, he has only 3 in his planted tank and they are too busy with BBA to be borthered with other fishes.

I was hoping the aros will cover each other backs.

buw, well. 1 aro costs hundred over bucks while 4 onli cost $50, which is better?
Ahem... yeo. Check out the smilies. :P
Anyway, I bought 3 more cigar fish. So far, the arowana hasn't "smoked" any of them yet. But, I've found them a little less bright in staying out of the arowana's way. More then once, 1 of them has found itself right in front of the arowana's mouth, only inches away, stunned and obviously trying to figure out whether to run or fight. So far, common sense has prevailed.

I'd love to see your aro smoking a cigar
