I have a 24 gal tank with 10 orange eyed blue tiger shrimp and some hairgrass and vals in there. My light source is from odyssea and puts out plenty of light. My problem is the alge is getting out of control, it the green hairlike alge and is taking over the tank. What can I do to cut down on the alge growth, I've just been picking it out but it grows back the next day it seems. I am using R/O water. Thanks for your help. Tom

Hi Tom, usually green hair algae growth is good for shrimp tank. It show that your tank is matual and water condition is good.

    Through my experience :

Lighting switch on for 12hours hair algae boom, I lower down my feeding and reduce lighting timing by 2hours to 10hours.
If it dose not control it lower down the timing again.

The most effective way for me is Dose Excel.
(Note: some have reported that it kill the shrimp and fish within 5min.
Do not over dose. If you are trying first time put half of what it indicate.)

For me I dose and over dose it without death occur. My friend have try it too without death also.
Reason maybe my tank is a mid to heavy planted.
The reason people have death after dosing excel what I suspect is that they dose other fert together with excel which cause them death. Or there may not be too much plant in the tank and overdose it.

Above is just my experience I have been through. Kindly enlighten me if other bro have their experience.
    Cheers
Enjoying every mins of the process. Happy Shrimping.

actually green hair algae being presence also means that the nitrates are higher then normal, is better to check your nitrate level, if it is too high, your shrimps might suffer, happens to mine when my green hair algae is showing, nitrate is about 35 ppm, using distilled water to reduce it to about 12 ppm.

For me Yamato don't seems to clear hair algae on the glass panel not ever nirite snail or oto.
I mean those that have already grow quite long 0.7-1cm type.

Scraping off is easier after that have to lower down feeding as bro guppy 77 stated nitrate rise.
On top of this get some floating plants to put it in.
You can see is pretty obvious if your nitrate is high floating plant will spread fast and beautiful after that once is under control you will find the plant starting die off bit by bit.

    Re: alge in shrimp tank

yes my nitrate was a crazy high of 35 to 40 ppm base on the tetra test kit, shrimps dying a like 1 a day or 2 day, finally found the reason, nitrate too high, now the picture is clear as i have been feeding the shrimps everyday, all my other parameters are ok, except testing for nitrate, seriously i feel much better now as i know why my shrimps died, distilled water really help to lower the nitrate, i have been doing partial water changes, follow by 2 bottles of 1.5 litres of distilled water poured directly into the tank and adding a bit of shitzen, mud power and rich water, now my shrimps are of intense red, white and black for BDS, so happy, am also very happy that my berried crs ad bds are still surviving, and no deaths for the past 3 days after i did that, guess i will continue to use distilled water to change it for this week, and in the same time closely monitor other parameters, feeding only on sunday, wish all of us have big success!
