I think the a lower temp can improve plants and therefore outcompete the algae. might work.
I have less algae problem now. But I think it's not only because the lower temp, but also more CO2, correct ferts, etc...

I'm back!

It will never prevent an onset algae bloom if it is coming your way due to poor CO2 and fertilization. However, cooler water holds more CO2 and O2 and that is beneficial for both plants and critters.

Basically, lowering temperature will slow down the metabolism & respiration in plants & algae. The rate of nutrients being depleted is slower. With respiration rate lower, the plants can also store more reserves. Thus, you do not run into nutrient deficiency as fast. You might find that you do not run into problem as fast as a high temperature tank.
However, keep up with fertilisation is still essential for maintaining healthy growing tank without algae. Having lower temperature may help, but it is not a solution to algae problem.

You can't run away from having proper ferts, etc. However, ppl I've spoken to that switched from non-chiller to chiller, find the tank does better overall with chiller. Personally, no experience.

A woman: without her, man is nothing.
