    That's quite useful... Thanks!
my largest female moulted again recently and i managed to take a video. strange that she moulted early in the night when the lights are still on.
she was staring right at me when she started turning to her side and her eyes moved towards the centre of her head, then suddenly they both retracted into her head!
Too bad when I got my phone she was already halfway through. zzz

    anyway here's my noobie video:

was it eating regularly before it started hiding? if so then just leave it alone. the crays will starve themselves for a few days before they moult, but after their shell hardens after moulting they will eat like they've not seen food before.

better clear excess food before it fouls the water in the meantime.

oh, problem is I have not seen it eat at all. Ok, when it was first introduced to the tank which already has a red cray, they fought like mad. 2 days later, they got used to each other. Then the blue one was trying frantically to escape, it tried for about 2 days before it went into total hibernation. From start till now, I have not seen it eat. But the red one, ate like there is no tomorrow.

No excess food, all gobbled by red.

    Re: Crayfish moulted!

if your tank is too small then there may be territorial issues. Ideally tankmates shd be about the same size and of the same species, and even then it will depend on their ''personality". Males tend to be more aggressive also.
you may want to consider seperating them or partitioning with a divider if the blue one can't find its own space.
either one may end up being killed immediately after moulting.

ok, something i have to think about. They are about the same size but i have to look closer to check their species again. I wanted to expand their one room flat to a 5 room, but Minister of home affairs is not keen.

    Thanks for the info.

Looks like the bottom of the cray is the way to tell.

if only there's an easier to tell, probably from a longer "eye lash" thingy.

nice video! your tank looks cosy for the cray to hide. how big is your tank? do u have a full pic of it?

I dropped a couple of pvc pipes into my tank, and my mini crays only did their exploration outside it. hopefully they will be making it their home tonight.

the crays were selling like hot cakes it seems. I was there last night and only 1 white cray left.
u might want to call the shop before going down, otherwise might end up a wasteful trip.

was at c328 yesterday night and they had 4 small white clarkii (after i bought 1 male). Shd have MFF left.
somehow the white ones sell out much faster than the red and blue ones.

anyhow my tank is 4ft X 1.5ft X 1.5ft. I'll see if i can post up some shots tmr. you have some full tank shots?

kermit13sg: can u postup a tank shot? maybe we can help to advise u how to partition. crays don't need much water height. you might want to explore modifying one of those terrapin floating platforms to create a loft for your one room flat. my sis bought 1 recently. shd be less than 2 red notes for a plastic platform with 4 legs that can be stuck to the tank floor. add rocks and gravel with a bit of modification to make it sink a bit, and you can have much more "livable space".

    wow, that's a big tank.

mine is a small one, 14 litres only.
this pic was captured last weekend.

I have removed the 3 pebbles, planning to glue some of it to make a cave (if i succeed).
in replacement, I have dropped 2 small pvc pipes last night. will take a pic when the crays r making a home of it.

Hi, you mean covert the tank to a double storey? I try to put up some photos, or if you have whatsapp, i can send you a picture via that app.

    Re: Crayfish moulted!

    My female molted successfully yesterday.
    I missed the molting again.

Perfectly intact shell. Will post pics later. The last time she molted was 20 May, that's 10 days before. I didn't think it would happen again so soon.

oh yah... here's a full tank shot. doesn't look very nice, but a comfortable environment for my aquatic friends to live and play.

phyxated, that's a huge living area for a bunch of crays. They must be really happy in there.

    Re: Crayfish moulted!

I bought a pair of white crayfish and one female passed on. I suspected it was either eaten by the male or a group of wild shrimps caught from the reservoir. Went to C328 yesterday and got another male. The female looks feeble so I decided to wait for some time before going to buy a female.

    Re: Crayfish moulted!

hi john, the female was most likely eaten by the male, especially if it had just moulted and is defenceless. haven't heard of crays getting killed and eaten by shrimps before... anyway sorry to hear about your loss. The shell of a freshly moulted female gives off pheromones which make the males go crazy so they have to get far away from their shell to avoid being killed. good to separate them before moulting next time and put them together only after the moulted one has started eating again.

males are quite territorial it seems. my young male now dominates a 1.5ft X 1.5ft space. any female who wanders in will be mated with and then allowed to scavenge for food for the night.

subsequently they will be chased away though the females are twice his size.

your cray is in luminous green or is that a photographic effect? sorry for asking as I don't have much knowledge on crayfish and I have not come across a luminous green in LFS and it looks really nice.
