platies not eating at surface!!

hello bros,

just bought 3 platies last week to add to my tank, 1 male 2 female.

prob is, when i feed flakes, they never go to the surface to eat.

instead, they wait for the flakes to sink, then eat them mid-flight. been reading up, normally platies go to the surface to eat.

main concern is, my danios finish most of the food floating, leaving very little to sink for the platies to eat.


how do i get my platies to eat at the surface?

Hi chew, give it some more time. I think they are still adjusting to the new environment. As of your danios eating up most of the food, what you can do is to drop food at where the danios always feed at and at the same time drop some food at another spot for the platies. If not, drop more food for the fishes and do more WC. I have tried dropping some freeze dried brineshrimp which I find success in getting them to tell surface from feeding.

That is true. Most fish are still stressed and apprehensive when they are in a new tank with other fish. They need time to adjust gradually. Some may not adjust well and they may suffer being bllied by other fish. For these, it is better to pay a lot of special attention when feeding. If they are still timid after a few days, then it is better to separate them first and feed them a hearty meal on their own. But feeding fish properly is also a technique.

Not possible to get them feeding from the surface since the Danios are likely to spook them. Your best bet is to use a slow sinking flake. Feed a little more so the platies get their share.
