    Looks like it's finally here..... I saw at NA Nature today the raved about clip-on MH set which many were asking about at Aquarama. Looks neat, and the light (150W) is postioned about a foot above the water (heat might be issue if you don't have a chiller or enough fans). I suffer from short term memory loss and i am poor with numbers so don't ask me the price.... anyway I'm not the one selling the stuff.

    Hi,

    Is 1ft above the water surface too short for MH light?

    If so, what is the optimal distance?

    Thks.

    Was told price less than $350. Was there on Thursday when it was brought in.

    these are MH for normal tanks (3ft and above) or 2ft deep tanks..

    are they cheaper? don't think so. but I think they probably make good for photo taking illumination..

    Koah Fong, sorry for borrowing your pics here.

    I didn't go to Aquarama so I didnt' see this product first hand. The ones at NA, is it the same as pictured above? Actually, the 2nd pic doesn't appear as though it's MH. Looks more like PL to me. And the caption states 100W (in KF's original imagestation pic). Anyone knows more details?
    Cheers

    Thats the PL version in the pic.

    The MH version look exactly the same except its an got MH bulb inside instead of PL.

    How's the maintainence will be like???.... For example if I wanted to change to other brand of MH or upgrade the wattage....

    From the design , it's not flexible for opening up for upgrades or maintainence....

    I didn't try opening the one I saw, but I don't think the manufacturers will make it unopenable for changing bulbs. Whether its easy or not is a different question.

    From what I remember seeing, I guessing the front panel with the glass is the only removable portion.

    speaking of lights... I was at Vin's mart (DIY shop) and saw small floodlights using halogen (I believe) tubes. Tube is about the same thickness as a pen and slightly shorter. Casing is about 6in x 6in. Cost of one set, including tube, is only about $23. Wattage is 150W. 500W is also available but slightly larger

    Other than the fact that the light is yellow, is there any other reason why we should not use that, perhaps in conjunction with while PL tubes? After all, we can get as much as 500W for less than 10% of the cost of the MH lights.

    Vin Mart has a few outlets. Try the yellow pages or business phone listing? or www.yellowpages.com

    light intensity and wattage are NOT directly equivalent.

    ie: 150 W of mh is going to toss out more lumens than 150W of PL or 150W of incandescent bulbs.

    true. guess I was just thinking from a cost perspective. I can get 2 x150w floodlights for $50. This will give me;

    1) better coverage of my 40 gallon tank;
    2) the ability to change the light intensity by using different combination of bulbs.

    Just wondering what's the downside to this, as compared to using a MH light, since nobody talks of doing this. Is it because tank will look weird or what?

    If you happen to check the specs, the lighting efficacy (lumens/W) from MH light is about the same as PL lights at about 80-90 lumens/W. Incandescent light, OTOH, is of course very much lower.
