Ideally the ones by magnum would be the best.

I'm pondering garden hose products, but I'm not certain if they are leak proof..

garden hose products should be good enough. not sure if you can get the correct size though as garden hoses could be using imperial sizes. believe those connectors are leak proof as people could be using those for watering indoor plants.
else visit plumbing hardware shops and get pvc taps?

I'm using Hozelock... leak proof. The other brands should be too. I've had them pressurised before (i.e. with the house tap open and the other end closed) with no leak.
