I have cared for many tanks as a hobby when i was 16 and stopped that hobby at 18 (DIE HARD stone and gravel hardened AQUARIUM HOBBY FANATIC WHATSOEVER). now im 23 and starting my first planted tank. I have done a few research and have rigged my 1.5 ft tank with some diy stuff. Ill post it here to see if it is a reasonable way to start.

    Shrimp and plant substrate.
    Coarse gravel.
    2 10 watt light
    a hang on filter
    a boyu submersible filter
    2 pink ciclids (lol)
    a type of moss
    a type of bushy plant
some grass (just planted waiting to spread all over)

I know my fish but i have no idea what the plants are called. lol

    FOR MY CO2 DIY RIG:

    1.5L bottle
    1/4 teaspoon yeast
    pinch baking soda
    2cups sugar
    (connected to airtube to)
    check valve
    (to airtube to)
    500ml bottle (as bubble counter)
    (to airtube to)
    3 way air valve Input

    Airpump
    (to airtube to)
the said 3 way air valve Input

the 3 way air valve output
    (to airtube to)
the bubble input of the boyu submersible filter

In the day, i turn off the airpump and its valve while turning the co2 valve on generating 2 bps.
when its night time i turn of the lights and switch to the airpump and turn off the co2 valve so that my fish dont die of co2. well this is a test tank because i have a 4 ft tank waating for me.

U want one diy setup just like that? ill do it for u and selling it at 10 bucks. And free delivery. airpump, filter yeast, sugar, baking powder not included. =)

By the way, Im looking for Hermianthus plants. Anybody willing to sell? Ill self collect. Sms 91999969

    uploading pics soon.

    What PLANTs are these??

    Thanks for sharing !
For DIY CO2 since the fermentation process can not be stopped, one can only vent it off at night (if wish to), rather than shutting off a valve (pressure will build up and blow off the tubing).
Hence would be interested to see hows your 3-way-air valve liked. Is it auto on/off or manually switching ?

Well the 3 way valve is simple.

picture from google but its exactly the same. The two with the switch are meant for oxygen and co2. and the one perpendicular to it runs to the tank. =)

I used pvc glue for all my piping joints. and the strength of the whole rig is as strong as its weakest point. - the joint.

with that kind of 3-4 way valve i can rig it to a few tanks! never thought of that till now. lol.

thanx for cheking it out!! Im new here btw. know anyone selling hermianthus. been looking all over singapore. thanx!

Re: DIY Co2 And oxygen filter

Mmm, not sure if is a good idea to shut-off a DIY CO2 that way. IMHO the pressure will continue build-up in the container because of the fermentation process. There were reports from some forums that ppl have their bottle blown off or at minimum the tubing will be blown off due to the pressure build-up.

If you don't mind I recommend one safer suggestion, using commercial products available :

This is a nano reactor from Dymax. Here it is connected to a Dymax powerhead PH-200 (their smallest range). Connect the powerhead to the same timer as the lighting. So when at night the powerhead is shutoff, the CO2 from the DIY bottle will vent off from the pump inlet by itself so it will not add CO2 to the tank water.

Notice the orientation of the power head this is important so that the CO2 when venting out at night will not "air-lock" the pump so it can start smoothly next day when the light is on.

TS: No need to turn off the co2 when not in use. It will just blow up somewhere, of it does not. At 2-3 bps there is a chance your piping is leaking.

Also, hc can be bought from c328. You can order from aunty if there is no stock.

Thank you guys for sharing. There was a leak indeed. Well. I've tried to save cost by experimenting. Good thing the bottle didnt burst 1.5l of yeast water while I'm asleep. Hahaa. I though c328 was a grid reference. I saw it somewhere in this forum. Guys I really appreciate it. Thanx!

Trial and error is good. You can find the right mix for DIY co2 for your setup.

It is indeed very cheap way if your requirement is just 2 bps.

Will be wait for your updates

C328 is the aquarium at clementi block 328, just like Y618, where Y = Yishun.

You were lucky that there was a leak. else it would have blown off.

Re: DIY Co2 And oxygen filter

I hope c328 prices are reasonable. goin there in an hr. c328, here i come!! for hermianthus plant and browse co2 products as well. hehehe thnx guys for helping.

By the way. I did some stupid things with my boyu filter while i was pissed at my fissidens. and i accidentally discovered the CYCLONE effect of my bubbles. It works like blowing a ping pong ball with an old man tobacco pipe. My bubbles didnt really float upwards but instead it hovers around b4 floating. I've taken pictures but the bubbles look normal. I'll try to upload a vid in youtube and post a link here. Stay tuned!

Re: DIY Co2 And oxygen filter

what did you do with your boyu filter to create the cyclone effect?
it is just at the surface where the water enters the tank from the filter right?

Connect CO2 to the small inlet at the top. (Can be from DIY CO2 or pressurized CO2)
Connect a small powerhead to the top water inlet.
    Position in the tank.
CO2 and water will mix in the diffuser and the water with CO2 dissolved in it will come out at the bottom outlet.
