Alternative filtration media

HI all, have been absent from the forum for quite a while as I have been busy with work. I was just thinking for this week if any folks here have any experience with using filter sand (those that they use for swimming pool filtration) as media? I know that pumice stone are being use commonly as bio media but can we also use the filter sand?

Would appreciate some meaningful discussions here.

My limited understanding is that filter sand requires some form of reactor to churn the sand, similar to K1 media.
