    Hi all,

I'd like to get opinions on which brand of cooling fan is suitable for a 2ft tank.

I just went to Y618 and saw a couple of brands from Dymax, ANS cooling fan 3000, ocean free and Hopar.

Anyone using any of these fans / brands before?

I think for a 2ft tank, the Mr Aqua Tornado fan would be good:

Yes on most days that are cool.
From never use fan to use fan max 2.5D from ambient.

Actually I got it cheap from a friend else I won't even use fan.

As per what felix highlighted, fan can only can bring down 2-3 deg from ambient temperature. Lets say your ambient temperature is 31- the max it can help is around 28-29. Some bro use more than 1 fan or even toyomi clip on fan which is more powerful therefore more evaporation and possible lower temperature (3-4 below ambient).

There are a lot of factors like location and facing of your house/tank. If your tank gets direct sunlight, of course the tank temperature will be higher...LOL

Not sure if you are going to keep expensive shrimps:- Note that topping up tank with normal tap water will cause your GH to rise which is not good for most shrimps. Some serious shrimp keepers go for chiller due to lower evaporation, stabilty of temperature & less frequent water top-up(with RO water).

Most LFS allows you to try out the fan prior purchase, you try them first and see which one works for you. So, you can test out one by one to find the one you like..

The things to look out for
    • Size of the fan
    • Mount-ability of the fan
    • Noise of the fan
    • Power/RPM of the fan
    • Cost of the fan

Do you mind sharing what was the misadventure? Was it human or equipment error?

The adapter overheated and died after 10 days, LFS told me their warranty for products is 7 days... the adapter is quite hot when i touched it, some bro say leave it and i even used a timer to allow it to rest for 30 mins every 8 hours of working every day.RIP in 10 days...LOL

Failure in the design and adapter voltage.. big fan but small adapter... i DIY withan ikea adapter and its alive!! lol.. the problem of the fan too noisy as it vibrates... so i bought kotobuki which serve me well..

I used Dymax w8 previously. Personally I find that using fan hard to bring down temperature. Additional to that you have to manually top up the water almost daily.

You still have to consider the swing of the temperature during the day and night.

Thanks for the info! currently looking at cherry shrimps since its known to be one of the hardiest amongst the bunch. With fan I'm only able to bring it down to 28deg, on very good days 27 deg.

I'm currently using two connected fans (previously was a quad cooling fan, two died so I removed them and left with these two). But the air flow doesn't seem to be strong. Not sure though whether the adaptor is still running power for 4 fans even though its left with 2. So that's why I'm looking for a replacement fan.

So far my temp has stabilised to 28deg even when fan is off (cause it's been raining these days). Only during the hot weathers that it'll rise up to 30deg! That's without fan. I know that chiller is a better choice but cost wise, I think I'll get it when I have my own house. Heheh!

Zee, I feel Malayan more hardy. Once their adults thou. ( I've got very old ones.)

Chiller is a luxury item for normal tanks. Fan is not very costly but certainly it makes alot more noise

Malayan are nice and hardy, i got 2 which was originally transparent and currently become brown colour, although not very solid brown, but they are a nice addition in the tank for newbie shrimp keepers and great algae crew....

    You actually saw them there?
I usually get my supply from NA or C328. You can say they look like ghost shrimps when young.

    Re: Recommendation for Cooling fan

IMO, Getting a fan is not to aim for the lowest temperature possible. Is to keep the tank water under much tolerable level. Without fan what was the average reading 11am to 6pm. With the fan, recording temp again during those period. If its minimum 2DC below average of without fan, i'm happy. Just my personal opinion. At any time of the day with the fan, i want it to be below 29DC. I'm a happy camper.

Personally i've used Gex, Dymax and ANS. GEX is not bad. ANS too. Felix and wongce mentioned kotobuki fans. Guys can give a bit of preview of this fan?

Remind me if the next time i want to search something on google, add the word aquarium to it. I search kotobuki fan and i get loads of images of anime girls in school uniform. -_-"
