Hi, my 3+ months old Hailea air pump is making a lot of rattling noise, I think it's probably gonna die on me soon.

Am looking for a replacement and hopefully more reliable one(and quiet too). I am just using it to power 2x foam filters in my 10L and 2L tanks. Think should be considered low requirement?

    Any recommendation? Brand/model?

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Recommendation for small air pump?

Rattling of air pumps, especially the smaller (light-weight) models, are a common occurrence, but usually it is caused by the positioning of the pump, or when it is in contact with something and resonating with it.

Such noises as above can be eliminated simply by repositioning the pump.

But if the pump makes the rattling noise while you are holding it, then the problem lies with the pump.

Re: Recommendation for small air pump?

Thanks for the replies. The bummer is that the new Gex pump I got is not exactly quiet.
The original Hailea brand one I got used to be quite alright. Not silent but bearable, but this Gex one is already noiser from the start.
I just left them on the table standing on their rubber legs.
Anyway trying to get used to it.. My wife says I'm just being picky, she doesn't really hear the pump noise.. Haha

rena air pump is the most silent of all small models. sera is not too noisy as well. hiblow baby is better, but may be too powerful for you.

Re: Recommendation for small air pump?

Thanks. I went down to C328 earlier but can't find the small rena air pumps... only one they had is a gigantic one...

I read some other posts in the forum talking about the Ocean Free models, was tempted to get one earlier but tahan myself. I'm amassing lots of duplicate items which is getting me constant nagging from the missus. It's punishment for being a newbie... "buy without research, buy on impulse... end up regret and get others"... and frustratingly, I just don't seem to learn!

Go for OF beetle. Much quieter than OF zero noise due to it thick casing for noise isolation. Another point to note is to buy a slightly higher rating than what you need cos it is much quieter to run at half the power than full power.

Re: Recommendation for small air pump?

Thanks for the advices... Somehow the Gex seemed to run quieter after a while.. Not sure if I'm used to the sound or it just sort of got "seasoned" after a few days.. Will make do with current setup for now.

Re: Recommendation for small air pump?

I agreed with it. Recently I just got a small GEX pump. It makes noises too when you turn on the maximum. I still prefer using the old serra pump. But somehow, when I went to C328, they did not sell anymore.

I have not tried a Rena pump before. Comparing to Gex pump, I personally think that Serra is better. Perhaps I might want to get one to compare.

It's common that diaphragm membrane air pumps to be noisy for first few days as the plastic is still rigid due to being new.

I have not tried gex before. Rena wins sera, however, output is not as strong. Currently using hiblow baby. Quieter than rena.

Re: Recommendation for small air pump?

    Hi there,

I just joined back to AQ after a long 10 years break.

Very clearly, I still remember the quiet operation of Rena Air Pump. It should be a good choice:
    1. Quiet operations as compared to those mentioned (less hiblow baby)
    2. Choice of sizes (different model available).
