Dear All, it's been a year since I last posted. I revamped my tank, using the previous setup's stones and driftwood to make a new scape. Just to share in this forum.
    image.jpg
This is the initial layout. I didn't like it and the next day, I switched to this:
    image1.jpg
I want a carpet of glosso, with staurogyne in several corners. At the leftback, I had nana and mini nana tied onto the driftwood. I have 2 other stemplants behind the left rock that I cannot ID. I will post pics of the updates soon!

    Re: My ROOT FOREST Scape

Indeed the 2nd layout looks more balance.
What is the background ? Plan to grow moss on it ?
One small thing IMHO the shape of the rocks seem a bit square not quite "nature" look.
May be when the plants fully grow they can soften it some what ?
And the root formation is really nice !

    Re: My ROOT FOREST Scape

Thanks dc88. I havent really decided what background I would like. Moss is a good idea. I am open to suggestions. meanwhile, i am waiting for the carpet to get ready. yep, i agree on the rocks. but that is what i have and i have to make do with it. The plants will hide most of the rocks perhaps when they mature.

    21st Day...
    Some more updates!
This is the pic I took today using iPhone. The plants have grown a bit more. Glosso has finally rooted and spreading out quickly! It will cover the foreground soon! The staurogyne repens have stopped melting leaves and growing new leaves!

Anyone can advice how to post full size pics onto this thread without being automatically resized into a thumbnail? Greatly appreciated!

I tried UG for the first time, a little portion at the corner of my tank. Looks ok, but I do not think it is going to survive the heat. Currently without chiller. Temperature can range from 26.3 degrees to 28.0 degrees. It is definitely hard to keep in the soil with yamato shrimps trying to uproot it! Everyday I would find some leaves floating.

    Re: My ROOT FOREST Scape

My nana is covered with algae, due to the high lights i used. My one and only otto is working hard to clean the leaves. I have 2 SAEs, 3 Yamato Shrimps & 1 Otto controlling the algae in the tank. They are doing a fine job so far, but the diatom on the glass is still a concern that I have to scrape off using a card.

Can someone help ID this plant? This is a very hardy plant. I got it from SeaView. I bought 4 stems of it. Apparently, it can survive the heat, the strong lights, and the algae do not grow on it. I am very impressed with this plant. It grows straight up very quickly, spreading open another set of top leaves every 3 days. I had to trim it by half the height. I replanted the trimmed portion back into the soil and it continues to grow! The only question I have is what will happen to the bottom stem. It haven't spread any new leaves so far.

Anyone can also ID this grass? This is the first time I am using this plant, and I would like to know the growth pattern for it, e.g. the temp, is the melting usual, how does it propagate, etc. Thanks!

This piece of driftwood is from my other tank, which I decommissioned due to neglect, and lots of algae was on the driftwood. I actually loved this piece of algae covered driftwood and I brought it into this tank as part of the decoration! It has grown well in high light and it has fed my algae eaters well! Sometimes my SAEs do not feed on the fishfood flakes. They just hide whenever they see me ?!?!? I know it is them that pulled out a couple of holes onto the algae, as you can see in the pic.

This is how I bring down the temperature when it gets too warm. I froze a small bottle of tightly capped water bottle. It will last about 15 mins before it melts completely. With this method, I can bring it from 28degrees to 26++degrees. I normally use it once a day to prevent overheating. quite unsightly method, I know. But its free.

The only regret is that the narrow leave java fern is not doing well, perhaps in the high light and heat. It is still growing, but not beautiful. Need some expert advice to find out how to make it grow more leaves. I do not have a pic of it yet. Post it soon! Please feel free to comment! More updates soon!

is this a 'correct' way to bring down the temperature in the tank? if yes, then its a jolly good suggestion!

This is a workaround during those hotter days. This is not a long term solution.
(how many bottles do you use to keep the temperature cool for the whole afternoon? Consider time is also needed for heat to be gained back)

Also, if it is not placed along running water. Not very effective when the bottle gets stuck floating at a corner of the tank.

you may see this happen in some lfs also during warm days.

However for a working person, not very feasible. But myself do use similar ways and only for the more warmer weeks of the year (like 2 weeks back). But mine were sealed freezing packs which can last 5 hours maybe.

If it was a daily chore a few times a day. I would rather op for a chiller. More time to spend enjoying the tank.

Yeah, it's not a long term solution. I dont like what i see too. But some days are really that warm, it does no good for the plants, therefore the simple way out is this. Nowadays, its not that warm, and i can skip this step.
