Just saw a tank with Ocean Free's logo on sale at Seven Star aquarium near where I live.

It's a 3ft by 1.5ft by 1.5ft, a size very comfortable for me, and it comes with a cover where I can house the overhead filter. I was told it's going for $200+, together with the iron rack.

Has anyone had any experience with this tank, or any of Ocean Free's tanks for that matter? Curiou to hear some feedback before I decide on purchasing it.

    Many thanks!

Well so far there hasn't been much complaints about OF tanks.

For me, it doesn't really matter. As long as it doesn't leak, im happy with the looks and bracing, all tanks will be the same for me..

And depending on what you will be doing, you might want to have special features in your tank like internal overflow system, or Crystal glass..

Thanks so much! I guess it's safe to go with it then.

I'm intending to keep a PB (kelberi bahia gold) and perhaps a couple of spotted tilapia, and thinking of using sand as a substrate and just one big drift wood tied with anubias. I suppose I won't be needing anything too fanciful in terms of equipment? Just a filter powerful enough since I understand they poo a lot. And regular vacuuming of the substrate?

i have been using it for about 5 years. no leakage, only problem is the centre bracing dropped off due to the heavy weight of overhead filter.

I'd be happy if it serves me well for the next 5 years.

Have you been using the overhead filter that came with the tank or did you change it to a different one?

i was using mr aqua overhead filter when i first got the tank, but the centre bracing only last 1 year plus. i think to prevent leakage, best is don't always move the tank here and there.

Hmm seems like the centre bracing isn't really necessary since your tank's still functioning without it?

Presuming I get the tank and the centre bracing does fall off, should I be alarmed? I mean, if yours is working well without the centre bracing, I don't really think it's a major problem.

    Quite excited thinking about it!

    Re: Ocean Free's 3ft tank

    OK Folks,

It appears I'm gonna end up with a 4ft by 1.7ft by 1.7ft tank instead, apparently made by Qian Hu (according to what the LFS auntie told me), although it bears Ocean Free's name on the cardboard box protecting the top and bottom of the tank.

    Anyways, my questions are:

    1) How exactly do you calculate the volume of water in the tank?
    2) Could you so kindly recommend a powerhead for this tank based on its size? And how is one supposed to measure the flow rate? (I'm intending to keep 2 or 3 marble gobies, a kelberi bahia gold peacock bass, and perhaps a couple of tilapia).
    3) Should I get a canister filter instead, say from Fluval or something? If not, it's back to question 2.

As always, thanks so much for the help! Having you folks here for consultation sure makes fishkeeping a much less daunting pastime.

    Re: Ocean Free's 3ft tank

    1) i usually calculate water volume from AF website.
http://www.arofanatics.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=4 <-- mod please remove if it's not allowed.

    2) flowrate should be 4 to 10 times of tank volume per hour. personally i always go for 10times.

    3) fluval FX5? or popular ehiem. overhead filter? sump tank? (but you need to DIY overflow pipes)

    Re: Ocean Free's 3ft tank

    Thanks Loudness for the help!

By my calculation on that website, 90 per cent volume of 4ft X 1.7ft X 1.7ft gives me about 294 litres,or 78 gallons. Sounds about right?

Ok that gives me a clear idea of how strong a powerhead I should get, provided the math is correct.

It's actually an overhead filter that comes with the tank cover. I should've mentioned this in the earlier post.

And now budget is a bit of a problem, frankly. So I guess I'll have to stick with the overhead filter.

    Re: Ocean Free's 3ft tank

if it's a stock overhead filter that comes along with the tank cover, i don't think it's enough. unless you can add more layers to it. if not mr aqua overhead filter would be better, maybe 3 or 4 layer, but that's provided your tank has centre and side bracing to place it.

another thing you can try is K1 media.

    Re: Ocean Free's 3ft tank

I'm a newbie so I did quite extensive reading recently. My verdict is as such.
-Ocean Fresh is a brand by Qian Hu. Did u call qian hu to check their price? Is good compared to LFS.
-canister filter is a worth while investment. Good filter solves many many problem and frequent water changes that means in Long run save u money
-due to such long lengths over head I very heavy when filled, stress ur tank.
-over head also blocks your top view. With canister almost whole top is open light can shine in evenly through out
-I reckon u need air pump, for that size a dual output with regulator will be good

Finally what is the over flow for?

    Re: Ocean Free's 3ft tank

At C328 looking at equipment now!

Overflow? There isn't one in my tank, if I understand correctly. It's just a plain rectangular tank with a cover that has an overhead filter that came with it.

So I should ditch the stock filter and get a canister one?

I need to keep the cover though, because I heard marble gobies are as good as Houdini in escaping.

    Re: Ocean Free's 3ft tank

Someone here mentioned the over flow device but dont know what's its for so see anyone here can tell me the newbie. I know as in the name implies but how it works cut off the filter?

Song leh can go shopping. I honestly feel canister much better. Even if center support gone still no issue. I reckon is more efficient too. Easy to service compared to over head. Just make sure the flow rate is enough because Your tank is huge.

Biggest advantage is the space it will free at the top. Please show me your tank once you have got it. They will deliver? I wish to have one too.

    Re: Ocean Free's 3ft tank

As far as I know, water basically "overflows" into a tiny compartment carved out from the main tank, by the side, where the filter media is stored. The water that flows into this compartment is pumped out with a powerhead to the main tank, and that's pretty much the cycle. Would this be right?

Right now my cover sits on top of the tank, on all four walls, so the centre bracing is virtually useless. I also like the idea of having a canister.

Last night at C328 I asked the auntie if I should get a canister filter because I doubt my stock filter can sustain the tank, but she said to go ahead first and use the stock filter. If it doesn't work, then get another powerhead and filter. So I'm currently using Aquanic Power Liquid Filter 3000 (as recommended by the auntie) and the stock filter tray, which I filled with a layer of sponge, and about two thirds of the tray with ceramic rings and the remaining with activated carbon. The water basically flows through the tray and into the hole at the end, and falls back into the tank. It can be a little pleasant to hear running water, but this is a little too noisy for comfort.

The folks at the aquarium shop delivered the tank FOC because I live very near them (but more likely because they just want to get rid of it ASAP?). I got the tank, cover and the iron stand for $380.

The picture of the tank is below. I am still unsure of what I exactly want to do with the tank, since I'm very conflicted on whether to lay a layer of sand on the bottom of the tank, and throw in some hardy plants tied to drift wood (maybe like java fern and anubias). And considering the noise, I might really just end up with a canister filter, eventually.

    It's a work in progress.
