Currently I have to top up about 1.5 liter of water everyday on my 2ft tank due to evaporation. Doing it myself is no big deal. I top up with aged and dechlorinated water and fill up the pail and add chemicals when it is almost empty. However, asking a family member or friend to do this is too troublesome unless I ask them to just take the water directly from the tap !

I am curious how much water do you guys have to top up each day, and what do you ask your friend/family member do for topping up water when you are away ?

I have 2 1.5L PEP bottles of water striaght from the tap which I store in the fridge vegetable section (not as cold as main section) which I use daily to top up, usually 1 bottle each time, then top up and put into fridge again. My fishes seem to enjoy the "cold water stream" when the water is being topped up!

I think it's not that cold as the fridge, maybe 20degs. Reason is I usually top up when I am home from work, and the tap water is warm from being heated all day in the water storage tanks on the roof I think.

You only top up once a week ? You mean you have so little evaporation ?

I am away now and I am asking my daughter to top up directly from the tap. I hope PUB don't suddenly dose in lots of Chlorine. Keeping my finger cross !

That's a shocker for me.. cold water from fridge??? why?? other than giving the fish a "high", I don't see any other purpose!

I just top up straight from the tap.

like i mentioned, the water from my tap is a little warm at times, anyway I think no difference, from cool tap water once it's in the tank.

    Hi Gan,

Why don't you top up slightly more than the level you want.
By doing so, u will not need to top up so often.

    Thks.

My tank water is about an inch from the top so I can't go any higher; and my moss wall is about 2cm from the water surface. If I top up less frequent, my mossess will be growing emeresed

Wonder dropping 1 cm a day is normal for planted tank with fan ?

I am not using a fan (maybe that's why the drop is not so significant)

    eer,

Isn't it more troublesome to use ice cubes.

Furthermore, it may lower the temperature of your tank if too much is used. in addition, sudden change in temperature is not good for your bioload especially for shrimps.

dun think it is a good idea to add ice cube! as the temperature will lower down by a lot at first then goes back to room temperature.

My tank loses about 1~2L everyday (because of my fans) but I top it up around once in two days.

Using tap water shouldn't be a problem, even when it is warm. The amount is so little compared to the volume of your tank. Some more - I do 50% water change without adding anti-chlorine etc.

Using ice? You will need more to lower it significantly. Eg. from what we learnt from secondary school (latent heat, specific heat capacities ), thats about 750g of ice to cool down about 60L (for 2 ft tank) water by 1 degree C.
