My personal opinion is you should contrast it.. So with all the rocks and sand, try using a black oyama. If you have a nice enough wall at the back I'd your tank with minimal wires hanging at the back, you can also try bare..
Hi all,
What is the most recommended tank background for say 3' or 4' tank set up? White oyama? Black oyama? or bare? reason for asking is I hv all of those readily available ie my old unused tanks.... thinking of a simple Iwagumi set up.... also, would like to use white or sandy substrate (for surface)... thanks in advance

depend on your preference, for me I like it bare so that I can change whenever I want.
For iwagumi which represent mountain, white backgraound which represent sky will be most suitable. However if your iwagumi scape have lots of colorful plant, black color will be most suitable because it will enhance the color.
thanks, really appreciate the comments and advice.... I thought so too bout the bare back, I don't hv wires dangling but its near to some grill-fencing.. not really appealing unless i put a standing plant in between the tank and fence. but if I am only thinking of grass scape (or java moss to cover the substrate?) and juz one bunch taller grass-like plants at back corner perhaps the white oyama background will work.....
I go to popular to buy those art & craft plastic board. Black and white. Therefore i can change my background as and when i like
Aquascaper?
