    Hi sheristoper ,

You can read shadow's blog regarding the cost roughly http://aquatic-art.blogspot.sg/2008/...5-minutes.html (sources from Shadow)
Its depend on the temperature you want to set , if you looking for around 26-26.5 i think the cost won't be any much or you can get a watt measure kit device
that i bought cost me $23 for that .

I have been using a Hailea 300a for 2 years now, it seems that a guage of $30 for every degree that you lower than your room temp is a pretty decent guide.

Example, room temp is 29 degrees: Chiller set at 27degrees should add your current electric bill by $60 dollars more.

My bill used to be $120 range but since having this chiller, It has increased to around $220 at 24 degrees.

    Hope this helps

$220 for one month? That means your chiller use $100 every month? That's alot in my opinion even for a 3 feet tank..

I seriously doubt that your chiller uses so much electricity. If it's so ex, something must be wrong. At $300 might as well switch on air con 24/7.

I think the other consideration is the size of the chiller. I was surprised at how big it is compared to the pictures!

    Re: Fan or chiller?

If you are using the correct capacity for your tank, your bill should not exceed $30.00 per month. If you use a more powerful chiller, ie: 1/2 horse power for a 3 footer, it should fluctuate between $25 to $28 dollars per month. Please note this is based on my own usage, I have use Teco, Hailea and Resun chillers and their difference is less than $5 dollars per month. Sheristopher, I would recommend Teco or Artica if budget allows and a more power to volume ratio. I hope this helps, happy planting!

    Re: Fan or chiller?

Thanks for all the advice. Seem like chiller is the way to go. Will look out for 2nd hand chiller. Anyone here selling?

I realized people modify their chiller to use external probe. According to them it improve accuracy in temperature taking and thus reduce the number of times chiller kick in (less kick in = less cost). Is that true? so I should buy a chiller with external probe right?

    Re: Fan or chiller?

Yes chiller with external probe tends to give accurate reading to prevent chiller unnecessary kick in hence saving in power bill.
