Hi I am starting my first 2ft tank for CRS after reading the forum for some time. Please help to comment on anything that I am not doing right. Would really appreciate it!

    Tank size: 2ft x 1ft x 1.2ft (Fishy Business)
    Substrate: ADA new amazonia (Petmart)
    Filter: Prefilter + Eheim 2215 (2nd hand)
    Chiller: Hailea HS-28A (2nd hand)
    Lights: T5 2 tube (2nd hand)

Plants: Mini Fissiden on bogwood and lava rock (2nd hand)

Currently cycling the tank for about a week. Squeezed some bb in from existing filter sponge to help with cycling.
    Temp: 26
    PH: 6.0
    Ammonia: 8.0

Once the tank is cycled I will buy 10 CRS to try breeding.
Please let me know if there is anymore I should be doing. Thanks!

You should consider installing a wire mesh at the water inlet. This is to prevent babies in time to come to be sucked into the filter.

very nice glass inlet and lily pipe i would recommend you to filter guard the inlet to prevent future shrimplets to get sucked in.may i know what filter you are using?
i will also recommend you to provide abit more hiding spots for example a bush of german seaweed that will be good hideout for shrimps the will be vunerable when they just molted

    Nice set up...
Like what other bro says....you need a mesh for your inlet part to prevent shrimplets to end up in your canister.

Some problem about the inlet and out let lily pipe will stain with Algea....

And i would advise you to add in a air driven bio sponge filter in.

Thank you for all the comments!

I bought a diy wire mesh from one of the bros in the marketplace, will install it once the water is cycled.

xconnect.: I am using a 2nd hand eheim 2215. The German Seaweed looks good and fluffy. Will find some on my next visit to lfs. I intend to get some HC and marimo balls as well to add different colour tones.

newlife: I haven't done much research on the air driven bio sponge filter. What additional function does it have? It seems that I just have to connect to an airpump? I saw it at the lfs, but the boss couldn't explain to me the function. Please advise?

I won't advise going into HC.. Your tank would have to inject CO2, a little fertilizer would have to be added for HC to grow nice.. If you are just going to keep shrimps, this current set up would be good enough...

And like what Newlife mentioned.. You can add 1~2 air sponge filter...
What is actually does is to make use of air that is pushed out of it to make sponge into a filtration.. And also it creates an additional form of providing O2 to your tank...

The black border around the top of the tank, is it some sort of hood?

You should also get some horn snail to cleanup your tank

You should also get some floating plant too to help absorb NH3 & NH4

It is just some black background plastic from the LFS. I use it to cover up the ugly water stain marks cause by falling water level.

Bro his first tank and you are advising him to keep bkk, wr and bb??????

TS, please start with CRS first. Once you can keep them properly then progress to bkk, wr and bb.

They are much harder to keep than CRS

Why not?? As long as he do his set up right the 1st time and keep the right parameter, i don't see why he can't start with bkk,wr and other shrimps
Last time CRS was a hard species to keep, now its easy? i believe is how much effort you do your homework, money and time you willing to scarifies to keep this shrimps
"To gain experience, you have to make mistakes" thats the only way you can improve on how to keep this shrimps.

Even experience breeder with the 'right' set up might not succeed in KK, WR or BB breeding for the first time..

If TS has money to throw and gain experience, by all means can buy all those and learn a lesson be it a good breeding or a hard lesson and improve...

Why is CRS easy now? Because everyone is trying to teach and improvise on what is the best for these shrimps... Not to mention the amount of products now to 'tweak' the set up..

We all learn from mistakes, yes... But by telling a new shrimp keeping to jump into $30~150 per shrimp as an experience I think maybe it's a bit far jump.. If a person cannot keep normal CRS properly, how can he jump into a more sensitive variant/species like KK, etc?

CRS cannot gain experience? It's definitely much much cheaper.
