Haha I think I will keep to CRS as I first planned. Thank you for all the advice.

Anyway I decided to update the look of the tank. New items added:
HC mat in the front left. M. Mattogrossense on the background
Sponge filter at the back right.
Moved the lily pipe inlet beside outlet after reading up on best position to place it.

Question:
I am thinking of moving my Seiryu Rock from another tank into this new tank. What do I need to do to wash the rock before introducing it? I do not want algae or ramshorn snails to come into this tank. Or is this a bad idea?

The poor hobbyist will advise you thru the poor way of gaining experiences.

You can get all the information about keeping the shrimps you want on google and even in this forum.
As a beginner or even an experience shrimp keeper, accidents or new issues are bound to happen.
Why not start with CRS first as they cost way cheaper?

Jumping in BKK or WR might not be a good idea.. Shit happens..

Once you go into HC means you would need CO2 dosing for better growth.. Please observe your CO2 'dosage'..

As for Seiryu rock, please don't add in if you keeping CRS... It will increase GH in a while and CRS will not be able to molt properly (not to mention KK, WR or BB)..

Wait.. This sounds like me... Hahahaha... And bro avex, I added Kurokinryo Rocks.. But also increase GH.. So anti-rocks in shrimp tanks for me now...

Also, YES.. I wanted to go against all odds and do a rock planted scape for shrimps, CRS, BDS, and also KK.. It's a hard lesson learnt.. Haha... But I am loving it... (not ever going repeat it again...)

still the same thing. its better for newbie to go low grades for new tanks.

even experience breeder also use their culls to test the tank first. if keeping them and breeding them are 2 different thing.

try to keep them alive first before breeding them.

Petmarts is mid range still sometimes Ben like to keep some chopper at the counter hahaha. Poor have poor way to play with their setup. rich have rich way to play with their setup.

As compare I agree the shrimp like crs now is cheaper than before unlike time when keeper pay 30-50 for a grade A crs now is like 2.80-3.00 a pc? From 150 a pc of bkk to 30-35 a pc? Price drop so the poor just have to bear and tahan from temptation of following the trend. But the rich follow the trend earlier.

I tried using excel for my planted shrimp tank.. Shrimps seems ok at that time but might be because my plants are absorbing faster then the shrimps are affected by it..

Would like to ask about your HC mat, is it HC grown on wool? Or just HC on its own? HC on wool is no good.. Many pest and stuff which might be transmitted to your set up and end up growing in your tank..

Better to have no rocks based on what I have experience before..

A shrimp tank and a nice planted tank cannot really exist together in one. Things that you need to make your plants do well usually are harmful to your shrimps, ESPECIALLY sensitive ones like bkk, wr and bb.

Alvinchan80: It came in a wool. I peeled off half the wool layer and forced it down to the soil. Just found 2 white worms in the soil. Should I get rid of the HC totally?

cheetf: The tank is sitting in my living room, so cannot look to shabby, otherwise the wife will raise objections.
Most of the plants are low maintenance, other than the HC, but from what you are saying, I better stop adding anymore to the tank!

Rotting plants will make it look shabby! Think best bet is moss, it is slow growing and rather maintenance free. Just need to tie it.

it might be a little too late to remove now.. The worms or other pests might have 'migrated' to your soil... Just keep a look out and siphon out if you see those.. Last time I purchase HC with no wool.. So I just need to quarantine and make sure no pest before 'spot planting' the HC.. You shouldn't place the whole patch of HC as the growth will not be good..

You can still try for HC but they do need CO2 and fertilizer to grow well.. Fertilizer can consider a big no for shrimp tanks, I tried Easy-life Profito at a very minimal dosage and shrimps seems fine.. But I still don't advise if possible..

Bro rascal, there is no harm trying but we wouldn't advise new shrimp keeper to spend money on those much more sensitive shrimps without even being able to keep normal CRS survive or breeding..

Even keepers who have kept CRS and breeding them well, might not keep KK alive or breed them..

Guess the only harm is how much a person willing to spend at start..

For me, PH, GH, TDS I seldom test... If all are doing ok, I won't go test or bother.. Even if I do it, it will be like a monthly test to see if the major parameters are ok..

As for topping up, I would think using distilled or RO for topping up would be best due to the fact that those are GH0 and TDS0 (or low reading)..

Tap water is best treated with anti chlorine (Shizhen for me) and adjust to your required GH and TDS before water change (not top up to prevent increase in those)

Water change is still required from time to time, weekly is advised as what others have said before.. But at a low percentage to prevent parameter fluctuations..

It may be a good idea to monitor your tds and ph during the initial few months of setup. Once the tank is mature then you can do it less frequently.

Just topping up water without changing could lead to very high gh values. If you intend to just top up then maybe do a distilled water top up regime. However it is still recommended that you change water to remove unwanted build ups in the water.
