Hi all, I'm Planning to start my planted tank soon. Just got some rocks from a landscaping/ aquarium place and want to get it ready for my tank. It's a little dirty with soil and lime deposits(I think).

I have surfed the net, and there are many methods or rather, opinions. From boiling to soaking in vinegar and scrubbing.. I have tried soaking in vinegar and there seems to be little bubbles coming out. Hope that it's because they are covered in lime. I'm not sure about which way and why, hope that someone can guide me here.

    Thanks in advance!

Bro, I did the following. Not sure if it's the correct way but it's some methods I derive from reading the forum.

    Scrub the rocks
Pour household vinegar. I'm sure it disinfect the rocks to a certain extent but more important, I want to check out whether it fizzle. I've tried vinegar on various rocks, some really fizzle and sizzle. That should give you a gauge of whether the rocks are suitable .

Then I pour boiling water and soak it.
I let it cool first before handling. I've scalp my fingers before due to being over excited in handling the rocks. Haha.

You can choose to scrub the rocks again but I lazy. 1 scrubbing and one hot water treatment for the rocks is enough for me. Then after that, it's the fun part of placing the rocks.

    Enjoy.

    thanks prodrive!

    hi all,

i soaked them overnight in vinegar as i noticed that they might have some lime deposits on the rocks.
after which i brushed all the dirt, soil, sand, lime algae off
then i went to boil them, followed by soaking them in tap water for 24 hours before drying and using them to scape.

hope that everything will be alright! removed most of the dirt, but seems like my rocks are getting smaller too!

@ qngwn, Don't forget to add a bit of salt and pepper to taste. Bro, seriously you boiled them in a pot? Or you mean you place them in a pail and pour boiling water? Hehe. I'm coming for dinner. Rock soup!
