Love them Malayan. Bought a total of 75 of them. Now all hiding in the dense plants. Occasionally I get to see them like 7-9 of them comes out. Exactlly what bubbles said, I use tetrabits and they come feeding.

Colours are great. Red and black are common ones. Bluish only once.
Yamato aren't shy though. They are pretty pushy. Will grab the whole tablet and try to move it somewhere. Apparently, the tablet attracts the corys, sae, harlequin, yamatos, malayan and otos. Pretty cool until they uproot my HC.

You bought 75 malayan and still can’t see them? I bought only 3 pieces and they come out quite regularly…hahaha. Keep feeding, they will all come out together. Yup, their colors hovers in black and red most of the time. Mine maintained at half red half black and will not go into colorless mode. I have given up yamato, they are food waster by grabbing others food and depositing somewhere without eating.
Wongce was a regular fans of “normal” Malayan shrimps until I brought him to see the real stuff. Come to think of it, the grey kitten owes me KOI bubble tea for my valuable recommendations..

Wa lau! You rescaping your tank again, One year so many times ah. If I am your Malayan shrimps, I will jump out of the tank and walk away in protest for disturbing my hiding places.

I don't feed much, only algae wafer/crab cusine:cut vegetable (remains from cooking). When I feel like feeding them.

I've got 2-3.5 cm Malayans (long ago from NA), some 1cm plus from seaview earlier this year.

@vsgenesis: use a cut bottle, poke a hole and sucker it to the glass. Train them to collect sinking wafers there.

I think I did myself in by cramping the plants at the back of the tank, end up the vegetation is so dense I can't see anything. haha..

If and it's a big IF, the 5 yamatos and the 10 malayan shrimps are all still alive, I think they will likely have setup a small community area at the back of the tank. Saw one Yamato and Malayan shrimp last night at the corner of the tank and when the floating flake food drifts by, the Yamato does grab it and Malayan just have to make way since it's smaller. Am worried if any were to breathe their last and go to heaven, it will go undetected and foul the water. Hopefully the remaining shrimps will help by feasting on it.. Just to play it safe, I've been doing alternate days 10% WC to hopefully keep water condition decent enough for the time being. Good news is that the 3 other Yamatos which I put in my small 10L all-in-one tank, they are all surviving and found a good hiding place near the back of the filter. 99% of the time will find them there.

I feel so stupid now... I went back to Seaview and realize they are selling the Malayan shrimps at $8 for 50... And I paid $5 for 10 last week. Best... I ask if I can pay $8 but just take 20.. but was flatly rejected. So out of impulse, I bought 50.. haha

Just to show how effective they are in cleaning up algae... this is my current tank setup, noticed the 2 bunches of ceramic rings which I have tied together into a tube at the top right:

Nothing short of amazement! However I tried to put the 2nd bunch of ceramic rings in to the bag of shrimps and sadly I think they are stuffed.. haha... not really busy with the algae though.

I think I will split the shrimps into both of my existing tanks. Seems awful lot to put into the 10gallon tank one shot.

No worries,malayan are quite shy and will not snatch food. Yamato is the yakuza in the tank,will push smaller occupants away and snatch food,but not to extend causing damage though (my yamatos are same size as my neon tetras).

Could it be the colours in your tank? I usually find the red ones near my rocks which is a reddish/orangey colour.

Those which are found further away, say along the sides of the tank are usually greyish/blackish in colour(probably matching the substrate).

But so far haven't found any blue ones yet even though i have a whole piece of Oyama blue for the background..

Hi, I think it's called water onion plant or Crinum natans as told to me by another bro in the forum.

I like it alot as it's like some octopus-like and moving in the tank with the water flow from the rainbar..
