to use an adaptor, you have to choose one with correct amperage. there are some case of adaptors are being unreliable or runs very hot. doesn't save much electricity compared to psu.
a psu has a lot of juice, 300w can run more fans than what your tank can have. and it's one size fits all and relatively cheap.

ok....i c...
so it's like if i use a PSU unit...i can basically put many many fans with just 1 of that unit...
here comes the problem...
i dun know how to fix the wire of the fans to the PSU although aeon wrote an article on that...

Just connect the white plastic connectors. very simple, nothing hard. Just connect the first fan's male to PSU's female, then 2nd fan to 1st fan's female, like a chain.

Most will have the molex connector, the 3-pin type is deprecated or is used for the cpu fan jack on the mobo.

Ball bearing fans are quieter than sleeve fans. Higher rpm has a higher CFM (cubic feet per min). Blade design is also important. Most ordinary fans like iCute don't have such info. The PC Mod brands like Coolermaster, Antec, etc will be more powerful and quiet. Can get in Sim Lim.

By the way, you can save money if you shop around SLS/SLT for used PSU. They go for about $10 to $20. You may have to open them up and give them a good vacuuming to get rid of the built up dust. Remember to test at the shop and buy a power cable to go with it.
Also note, there are AT and ATX PSUs. The older ATs come with a on/off switch but the cables under the switch are high voltage (see Vics in the first page of this thread), so for safety sake you need to DIY a switch box (see my pics in the first page of this thread) or use lots of electrical tape.
The ATXs are switched on by the PC motherboard. To switch it on manually, you'll need to short out a couple of pins, Aeon's article shows how. The link is on page 3 of this thread, one of his posts.

pc and dc fans are similar.

Anyway most of the fans you see in Sim Lim Square are PC fans with molex connectors cos that's what people are buying and the shops are selling.
Best shop is 5th floor forgot the name, at the corner... can't help much in directions here.
If you looking for branded fans, the shops around 3rd-4th floor should have them, especially those that sells overclocking stuffs.

hehe. you are referring to sim lim square while i am referring to sim lim tower. most dc(pc) fans from sim lim square would have the molex connector to cater to the pc market.
Oh ya Sim Lim Tower sells all the electronics stuff and Square sells PC stuffs.

Actually i am thinking of using a unused handphone charger ( yes handphone charger) to power the fans....
By right they should work ba.......the charger is of a slightly lower voltage but in my opinion will only lower the speed of the fan by a bit?
The ampherage will be enoug i figure....so before i embark on this experiment....any one of u tried it b4?

chances are that they will not work.
dc fans are designed to work at 12v, runs much slower at 7-8v. however, handphone charger operates at <6v (for most of the newer handphones). so your fan may not spin at all. even if it spins, it will be quite slow.
oh...
its not a handphone charger...it's those cordless phone type....the label writes...9v 200mA..
Might give it a try this weekend....will keep u guys posted!
