I currently just got a second hand Eheim 2213 filter. Was wondering what filter medias do you all put in it? Is it necessary to use biohome... or just CRs and Lava rocks would do?

Anything with a very high surface area. ceramic rings, those with ultra porous surfaces are best.

Foam no need too much, half is what I use.

Biohome is used for biological filtration, you can also use ceramic rings or bioballs. Filter wool is used for mechanical filtration.

For my 2026, I use Eheim ehfimech + japanese matting for the first tray and Eheim ehfisubstrat + filter wool for the second.

    Re: Filter Media

    Some facts about filter media
    A) 1 cu.ft. of Lava rock = 16sq.ft. surface area

    B) 1 cu.ft. of Bio Balls = 64 sq.ft. surface area

    c) 1 cu. ft. of Open Cell Foam or Japanese Matting = 120 sq.ft.

The matrix design of foam prevents channeling and allows even flow for 100% efficiency. Foam has one of the largest surface per square foot.
