why do you need a cover? Just get a pair of light sets (either FL or PL) and place them on top.... that should be good enough. Have a look at those at NA Nature Aquarium.

it just seems that the PL lights are really bright and cause the whole living rm ceing to be illuminated - no need to switch on other lights any more!

Isn't that good that you can save on electricity?
Anyway, covering your tank will get it heated up pretty fast unless it has cooling from fans or chillers.

Same for my house, the tank lights are brighter then my living room lights.
If your tank lip is above or near eye-level, consider getting open top covers. Basically its just four (or three) sides to block the glare, and no cover on top to allow ventilation. Even then this can cut a good percentage of airflow. installing a few fans inside to circulate the air will help plenty.
I should do it for my tank, but I'm not keen on the extra height nor having to remove the cover everytime I want to feed or maintain the tank. I just get a couple of boards to block the light when I have guests.

Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
