Hi...! Newbie here, I was wondering what are the factors to consider when purchasing a tank, like what do you take into consideration when buying a tank.

I am looking to purchase two 2 feet tank and I have been to a few LFSs and some tanks are pretty similar but the pricing between them is big.

Different in pricing could be due to type of glass used. A low iron glass is higher in cost compared to regular glass and slightly weaker. Too low iron content in glass would result in pitting of the glass surface.

    Re: Enquiry on Tank selection

Choice of tank depends on how experienced you are in fish-keeping. If you are just starting in the hobby, it is not advisable to buy an expensive tank,
unless your parents are happy to pay for it. Fish-keeping is a very demanding hobby and there's a lot to be learned. It is best to start with a basic
rectangular glass or any of those lower-priced Oceon Free curved-front tanks. Experienced aquarists, on the other hand will want good quality stuff,
on account of their expertise and experience, including rare or exotic livestock.

Clarity of glass, type of bracing, dimension, whether it is custom built or mass produced are factors affecting pricing.

A good tank will be an Oceon Free 2 feet, which costs less than 50 bucks I think. I bought mine many months back for less than 35. Glass quality is not bad, with curved front corners. Make sure you place the polystrene sheet under the tank before filling up with water.

ADA is a brand of tank to look into if you're serious about this hobby.

The problem with used tanks (pre-owned?), is that you don't know the actual age of the tank. For any tank, most importantly one must think of the silicone seal. If the tank is too old, the seal may have outlived its useful life, and one will need to worry about problems caused by a leaky tank. So a good rule is to buy only new tanks.

Can consider a Gex tank. A 2ft should go for under your budget, I think. They produce nice tanks with good silicon work. I'm not a fan of curved front tanks. Makes the vision warped and the overall look and feel just doesn't cut it. If that's not an issue for you, then have a look at EJA's tanks as well. Low price point. Overall, I would still go for Gex tanks for a low-mid budget setup.

    Re: Enquiry on Tank selection

    Haha CFO ask how much;
    You: "oh it's $50 dear."
CFO: "I wan to see receipt"
You: "oh small shop dear, they don't have those cash registers that print receipt"
CFO: "where is the shop? I go find out myself"
You: thinking to yourself.."sigh, I guess I'll be sleeping in the living room for awhile.

Anyway, Ocean Free is glass. Bought a couple of 45cm tank last week from Aquastar. Less than $30 each. Perhaps, what you can do is to survey first. If you are staying in the North East, you can go down to Seaview, Y618, Aquastar (just to name a few - there lots around) One thing that is left out, where are you going to place the tank? Ie rack? cabinet? Actually there are a few more questions to ask before you decide. But since you are just asking for tank, my best bet is Ocean Free.

Of course CFO needs to know, she sure demand to know. Unless you buy more expensive stuffs to her then she might close one eye.
