I think you got sick snails. My zebra snails started eating the glass clean alkmost immeendiately after I put them in. But then, within a week, most decided that the algae on my driftwood is tastier. The thing is that the algae on my wood actually looks like a dark satin/velvet sheet, very nice actually, compared to those on my tank wall

would the hard plastic card cause any scratches?[/quote:5339d5764d]

any scratches will only appear when tank is dry.
when wet, all scratches will 'disappear'.[/quote:5339d5764d]

No, not all scratches can disappear. I came across a friend's tank so badly maintained. He had used the gravel to scrub off the algae on the walls. And the lines are still visible when tank is filled with water.

using gravel to remove spot algae??? that's like using sand as a facial scrub. *ouch*

I'll stick to using a used phone card

Try putting it next to the glass(touching it) in an upright position. Don't just throw them into the tank and they may land upside down.

I recommend zebra snail for glass cleaning!

They are not suppose to 'work'. They live a slow life wandering around munching on algae. If it stay in it's shell, chances are something is not right about the water parameter. Or maybe there is a fish that could be taking small bite at them when you are not around.

So far my zebra snails doesn't seem to touch plants. They only climb on driftwood, filter box and glass or any hard and smooth surface.

nowadays i use those white filter media, commonly found in all lfs, to scrub the surface.
Seems to be very effective and does not leave scratches on my acrylic tank.

    white discolouration on tank glass

Have this large glass tank for almost 3 yrs already. When i finally shut it down for a revamp(inspired by aquascaping, thanks to this forum!! ), i noticed there was this whitish opaquicity at some areas along the watermark. Tried using a razor to deal with it but to no avail. Ive waited for it to dry, tried using a flame on it(in case it turned out to be organic in nature). No cookie. Is it actually mineral deposition or some corrosion from the water(!!!)? Anyway to clear it out, becos it looks really unsightly. Thanks!
