Welcome on board dude![]()
Hi everyone.
Been browsing this forum for a while, and i´ve seen that you all speak of your tanks in length, not in litres, or gallons, how come? isnt easier to understand the size when you say it´s 500litres then if you say it´s 120cm long, i mean, the tank could be 120cm deep too ? hum.. maybe i´m just plain stupid or something, but it seems very "different" to me ;P although, i am from sweden so![]()

because a 140 gallon tank get either be
eg: 5ft x 2ft x2ft or 10ft x 1ft x 2ft...
the height of most tanks in singapore is usually 2ft. very rarely 2.5 ft.
width of most tanks are 2ft. sometimes 2.5 ft
which is to say the above breadth and height can be infered especially when space in a hdb flat is limited.
*just proposing a lame reason
I agreed with loupgarou........here people mainly keeping high to medium maintenance tanks, so we are very concern about lighting intensity and therefore concern about tank height. While in expressing tank volume (litres or gallon), that is useful for calculating dosing of chemicals and changing water, etc etc.
That is my opinion.![]()
I think it's because of the large range of tank dimensions available (and the fact that many folks custom-make their tanks), so using Litres gives little indication of the tank's dimensions.
As tank dimensions are pretty standard, it's often enough to just state the width, unless otherwise.
In Japan, people refer to tanks sizes as 60cm, 90cm, 120cm, etc... while in other countries, people use gallons, litres, etc...
It's not really an issue for concern I think...
I'm back!
Actually, it's good to post BOTH the tank dimensions (LxHxW) and tank volume. It helps ppl to answer questions without having to do extra calculations.

Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
I think mainly because we were taught that way in school. When calculating volume, we usually started with length, then breadth( or width) and then the height. During conversation by implying that you are keeping a 3ft, 4ft or any larger size tank, people generally has an idea of the size of the tank. BUT if you say that you are keeping a 50lt or a 500lt tank, you would only make someone curious and that someone would then ask again the exact length of your tank. The volume of water is secondary to the size of the tank( during conversation). Get it?![]()
Hope this helps! Just my humble opinion.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.

This makes more sense. totally agree.
I'm back!
Length: One dimension and easiest to visualise.
Volume: 3-dimension, I can't visualise.![]()
