do you require the accuracy?
if you need precise readings, you'll need laboratory thermometer.

positioning of the thermometer does not affect it accuracty. however, placing it at different locations in a tank may give slightly different readings.

If you have those good lab ones at home, remember the difference or mark it down. That is enough if you have just 1-2 tanks.

i prefer the pen like thermometer that you stick it inside the tank and if it is digital i prefer the one with the sensor probe.
Personally i think both are accurate.
Not 100% but good value for money.
