Hi guys, after reading so much ABOUT tanks.i've decided to setup my own....all equipment from C328...

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1348480836.323227.jpg
    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1348480859.432892.jpg

    Substrate is FROM Gex
Plants are basically java ferns, moss and anubias...

    Just a few QUESTIONS...

    1. Do i need to manually add in co2 for this setup?
    2. If i wanna add in "carpet" plants...WHAT plants SHOULDi get for beginners...i read that HC is quite difficult.
    3. If i were to put in my fighting fish now, will it survive?

Thanks in advance. Looking forward to the advice from all the sifus here!

    Re: My new Tank!

Nice setup!. One thing though, from the picture, it looks like the java fern is planted into the soil, you should tie them to some DW or the rhizome will rot.

For carpet plants you can try e tenellus or hairgrass, easy to grow

Best you add the betta after 2 weeks or so, when the tank is properly cycled.

    Diazman...THANKS!

Anyway so Java Ferns are not meant to be planted into the soil?
Okie, then I will take it out TOMORROW...

    Currently, I'm looking at 2 things...DIY CO2 and glosso.

    Re: My new Tank!

Java ferns, anubias plants just tie them up on driftwoods. They have poor root system and absorb nutrients mainly through their plants

Judging from your lights, it might be possible to grow glosso. Read up more on diy Co2. Have fun!

    Re: My new Tank!

For easy planting of glosso, it is better if bring water down just below soil level and top the existing soil with thin layer of soil in fine powder form, so that glosso doesn't keep unrooting. Try also lowering the front soil layer with 2 cm and level it horizontally. Currently the front looks too thick in proportion to your tank size.

    Re: My new Tank!

You dont need any co2 for your current setup and plants. With co2 introduced and not properly controlled, there might algae problems so beware..

For your fighting fish, you can add it in after a few days as they are generally quite hardy...

Nice setup! I would think elatrine triandra (ah pek plant) might be easier to carpet for your tank conditions. I do have 2 cups on hand.

    My new Tank!

    Update on day 8:

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1349249996.202698.jpg

Changed my lightings to AquaZOnic Super Bright LED 15.72w (Got it from bro civic76 in the marketplace)

Marimo died due to high temperature (i think). Therefore, I decide to add a fan (Dymax Vortex W-5) and a thermometer, both from C328
Temperature is now 26c in the day and 24c in the night.

Added my red betta fish and also a few neons as well!

    Comments are welcome!

    My new Tank!

I took out my red betta...because it just kill one of the neons... =(

Anyway here's just my overall setup...

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1349263693.615920.jpg

Now my neon seems much happier anyway!
I'm planning to add in guppies next. When the tank stablise, probably will be in crs.

Just one question though, when i feed my neons, they will be bits of leftovers dropping down to the substrate. Anything i can do or any fish i can introduce to help me "vacuum the floor"? Hehe

I like how you reuse your older set of lights!

We have a betta too which we isolated as well for the same reason. It's in their nature to chase / attack other fishes.

It's a good idea to add more after your tank has matured. I added livestock too soon and lost quite a few as a result.

    Re: My new Tank!

just syphon up sludge with tube during water change will do, doesn't have to be a thorough job. Don't add plecos to do the job because they tend to knock around and stir up the soil when hiding from the light.

    My new Tank!

Okie...i think i will get those longer sucker tubes to suck out the debris.

Currently the plan is just to leave the tank as it is for another week and monitor it.

For the past 2 weeks, i've not been changing water and the filter. I've only done top-up of water every alternate day because of the higher rate of evaporation due to the fan.

Qn1. Since i've done topup of water(about 10% each time), do i still needa do a weekly water change?

Qn2. During this cycling period, do i have to change the filter? What i am currently doing is that i put in a 2nd piece of filter during the start 2nd week. So as of now, i got a 2week old filter and a 1week old filter in my HOF. On monday or tuesday, i will take out the older filter and replace it with a new one. Like that, i will always have a "seasoned" filter in my HOF.
Can advise me on whether the above is alright?

    Thank you.

    Re: My new Tank!

You can load in some shrimps like yamato to help with leftover food.
Regular water top i think is close to water change so should be fine. Not familiar with the type of filter that you use but for canister, maintenance about every 3 months, where we take out the media and light rinse it in tank water so that we won't lose much of the beneficial bacteria while getting rid of sludge cumulation.

    Re: My new Tank!

IMO, water topups and WC is two different thing. Best you carry out Water change (WC) to clear dirt/poo. Topups helps in maintaining water level in the tank.

If you wish to seed the old media, just let the old filter run together with the new filter. The BB will be seeded from the matured media to the new media, speeding up cycling rate.

    My new Tank!

Currently i'm noticing green spots on my tank surface...these are green spot algae right?

Should i do anything about it or should i just let it be? Will it disappear by itself after sometime?

I read in the forum n that algae growth is good and signs that the tank is go through a good cycle (correct me if i'm wrong).

Please advise again. Thanks and sorry for soooo many questions! Hehe.
