Advice needed! AZOO Mignon Filter 150

    Hi!
I've a small desktop aquarium with 4 sakura red, 2 red rili, 2 tiger, 1 cherry, 1 yellow goldenback and 1 yamato. Plenty of tiny shrimplets as well.

But the much smaller shrimplets have been sucked into the filter so often I've tried covering the external of the inlets but it obstructed the water flow. Now I use cotton and sponge to block the inner tube. But every other day, I need to clean the sponge because the dirt simply clogs up the whole thing and water is not flowing out as much as it should be. I've already found 7 shrimplets dead on the sponge, could be being sucked and unable to break free..

    What should I do?

Water condition should be OK since I found new hydras and limpets in tank. Adult shrimps are active, no abnormality.

You could get a sponge to cover the intake. Or a small fine mesh bag. I use a mesh bag on m powerhead.
Also are you sure the species don't crossbreed?

Alternatively you can look for a shrimp filter guard as well.

Thanks all for the advice! I've even resorted to using the pyramid shaped silk tea bag haha!
I should go and check out the shrimp filter guard too!

The rili, sakura and cherry will cross breed but they haven't. I don't think tiger, yellow goldenback and yamato will mess around. the 2 tiger shrimps are male (maybe I should swap one with my colleague for a female..) and the yellow goldenback is a lonely female. She joined the tank berried so there's a few of her shrimplets now (minus the unfortunate few who might have died in the filter).

I hope the rubberband doesn't cause the shrimps any harm.. but the water flow is definitely back to previous without blockages. Will monitor for a few days and see if the water condition improves.

Why don't you get those sponge or the stainless steel mesh protector instead?

Those sponge are the sponge that used on the air filter. They can also add as a layer of bio filter as well as protecting your shrimplets from being suck into the filter.

Both sponge and stainless steel mesh protector can be readily bought from LFS.

The rubber band most probably will not cause any harm to your shrimps but the rubber band will degrade and break, your shrimplets will still end up in your filter

Er... Having Hydra not to mention new hydra is not a good sign. It doesn't mean water is good it meant that you have poor water circulation. Like most hobbyist mention you can use a sponge or wire mesh or like a those stocking that woman wear (make sure you wash it soak if you are using those old one if new try to soak it sun and soak again).

Forgot to mention Hydra is a pest it will stun shrimplets so do try and get rid of them if possible. I've a 2ft last time infested by hydra my shrimps all keep hiding they don't even move around during feeding. And i meant very infested behind sponge, on the plants, on the soils, tank walls.......
