Moss Turning Brown In New Tank! Please Help?

Hi All, I just got an aquarium for the office and I'm now in the process of Cycling the tank.

I just got Marimo Balls for foreground broke them up into small bits and hopefully they form a nice carpet.

I made a bad move for the weeping moss by tying them overlapping with each other and I've got flame moss at the background.

Although the tank has been cycling for a total of about 1 day, the moss and algae seems to be browning abit.. Anyone can shed some light on this?

No ferts or CO2 used.. Just O2.. here are some photos!

What is the tank's temperature? Water is kinda cloudy though, what's the substrate used?

Don't worry so much about the moss, green shoot will eventually grow back from the browned out areas. Patience is key Moss usually need clean water and lower temperature to thrive, although some of the bros here including myself included have been able to grown moss around temperature 28-30C

Temperature is about 22 Degrees Celsius.

I'm using Tropica Substrate. Should I do a water change since the water is cloudy?

Hmmm how long does it usually take before the shoots start to overtake the brown ones?

No worries haha. I used to ask a lot too when i first tried growing moss

Your temperature very suitable to grow moss. Usually the fastest by 1 week you should see green shoots growing out from the moss.

Im not familiar with tropica substrate though, maybe other users can contribute here You could probably WC a bit, just to clear the cloudiness. Not too much though, since moss don't really like too much change in it's environment (atleast in my experience )

Anyway I leave the lights on 24/7 because I'm alittle kiasu. Some people told me this will encourage an algae bloom. Should I stop?

How long should I leave the lights on for?

My tank is a 24L Ocean Free Nano tank. 4.8watts LED lighting.

I'll probably do a 20% WC tomorrow and see how things go.

24 hours lighting will only grow algae . You can start with 6-7 hours first, increasing it gradually up till how many hours you want it switched on. (mine is 8 hours at most only)

I assume you will not be adding C02 right? Additionally, from your first post, i see your filtration is only air driven pump?

I didn't see any filter. A good filter should be able to clear the cloudiness in a few hours to a day.

Ocean Free Nano Tank, comes with a rear filter. It's a normal sponge filter behind the black wall with ceramic beads and all.

It's not exactly working wonders in clearing the tank but it's still doing the job for now hehe.

4.8 Watts should be able to grow the moss, since it's low light plant afterall. If you abit "kiasu" like me, i use those powerpac brand light for desk (i drilled it to the wall instead), power it up with a 15 watts phillips spiral PC bulb to light the tank. Quite hard to find lightset for small tanks

Just to share, this is my old setup back in early 2012, low tech, high temperature. Inside are some flame moss, Christmas moss, spiky moss, java moss.

Wow awesome looking tank diazman!! Yeah no C02, all my colleagues sure think I'm a weirdo if I start bringing in gas tanks or bottled DIY canisters into the office haha

I have a 20 watt warm desk lamp too, can use that to help the growth too on top of my 4.8watt.

So I should just WC 20% and be patient right? Need to trim the brown moss away?

I got the moss from an online shop, the moss might be out of the water too long when they delivered. Not sure if that is the reason for the browning tho?

Hopefully they start to green in a week or two. How often should I do a WC anyway? Since my tank is cycling ATM?

Im not too sure about cutting the brown part though, i just tied them up together, and the new green shoots up from the brown part. WC and wait for it to bloom hahaha

Hi All!

I went into the office today and checked my tank. The cloud is gone and I think the weeping moss is slightly better. I can see the leaves reaching towards the light. I'm not sure if I'm seeing things but I decided not to do the WC yet.

Probably will do it only next week. Here's a picture.

Anyone have any advice on how to get rid of the gravel on the marimo moss?

And does anyone have a cheap second hand trimming kit that I can buy? Those online are super expensive like $200 odd.. Ouch..

I don't bother with those expensive kits. I just use those Daiso scissors and hack away my moss . You could probably use a plastic piece and just push the gravel aside, should do the trick. In any case, the tank looks great now.

Haha Thanks for the advice! Now just to wait for the cycling time of 4 weeks to be over, before I can put in my Fire Yellow Shrimps... I'm quite scared to take out the Marimo to clean them, afraid to disturb the substrate and then have to wait for the cloud to settle again.

Wah thought I can get a tank in the office to destress, turn out more stress haha

can grow one, just need a lot of patience if you going low tech. haha. very long wait for things to settle down
