Yes, exposed to rain and shine. No filter, just air stones and I only feed them once a week.

wow this is interesting..those sakuras are definitely very hardy..shows it is very possible for them to live in the wild.. unlike us hobbyist keeping tabs on our water parameters frequently, just to keep them alive..

    My Sakura from outdoor pond

This is really interesting... Because I have an overseas friend who place his PRL/CRS cullings into his outdoor pond and they survive.. Haha..

    I won't dare to try..

Re: My Sakura from outdoor pond

Very nice!!! But not new last one I bought my fire reds from a bro that has a rental pond near seaview. The shrimps are all fat and has sexy legs but last time I very budget I only bought five peices totally regret. However his pond size is smaller 2ft by 2ft filled with water lettuce same as bro dragon there is an air pump outlet and I asked to touch the water was surprisingly it is cold I guess the concrete is doing the magic And the water lettuce helped too hehe and he feed them those cheap fish food but sadly the next time I visited he told me the Nea spray insecticide at the nearby forest and the pond was contaminated ALL UP LORRY
So this is a risk To bro dragon.

    wow! very simple setup indeed!
congratulations for the successful breeding, bro.
its amazing to see the simplicity that works wonders.

from your picture, does that mean you don't have any plants in the pond also?
I see algae in the pond. and I supposed you don't top up the water, just like the rain do the job?
and lastly I don't think you add any solution, bacteria building, or any thing to the pond, right?
sorry for so many questions as I am very keened to learn such setup because my goal is to maintain my shrimp (low requirement) tank in the most "natural" way (if possible).
looks like it is the sun + rain water + algae that does the job?

The pond is only 4ft by 8ft. No shelter from direct sun and rain. There are some plants in the pond. I have never measure the temperature before. The airbubbles make movement in the water, and I believe that help in checking the temperature from rising too high.

Thank for the informaton. I have these ponds for more than a year and inherited these shrimp from the previous owner who gave up the ponds. So far so good. Touch wood.

They just breed themselves. I do have plants in the pond but don't have any floating plants. Yes, there are algae in the ponds and that could be their source of food. I usually don't top up water except during the dry season like 1 or 2 months ago.
I don't add solutions or minerals into the ponds. I hardly feed them too.

The base of the pond is sand and I do have small fishes in the pond, like Cardinal Tetra and some feeder fishes that will not eat my shrimp.

Someday I may try to keep CRS in the pond.

I see. Thanks for sharing so much information, bro.

I have very minimal knowledge on CRS. From what I read, it needs low temperature and it is much more sensitve to water parameter than Sakura. It might not survive or last long. But it would be great if we get to see a successful CRS keeping in such setup, like what we have learnt about Sakura now.

Anyway that how fire red originated- Pond bred, direct sunlight and algae.

Just to share...when I was in Taiwan sourcing for good quality red shrimps about 5years ago, the owner show me his cemented ponds.

All full with good quality red shrimps.

You can attempt to breed CRS in those pond too. But just that the white part of your CRS will not not as good as those tank bred.

There is a netting at the top to keep away predators.

Will experience with CRS in both ponds one of these days. Thank for the information.

Nice shrimps! Sakura/ cherry shrimps are pretty hardy, I always keep them in non-chiller tanks and they do great. Think as long as the temperature is below 30 degrees its not an issue for them. I keep mine in tanks with no internal filters so the temperature is a constant 28 degrees. I'm also thinking of trying CRS in my non-chiller tanks, don't know whether 28 degrees is too high for them.

Re: My Sakura from outdoor pond

It is good that you have net over the pond, do please take note that dragonfly can still drop their eggs through hole.

My only worry for my open pond is predator nymph of Dragonfly, Damselfly, Great Diving beetles and a few other insects.
Saw a few dragonfly visiting my pond recently. and I have no intention to cover it with net.
Expecting the worse to happen but I hope that they do not cull the whole population.
If they do that, I will be putting Koi in it to cull those little bugger back.
