    Hi bros,

I am hoping to replace the filter in my GEX Slim HOF but I'm not sure which one to buy...the packaging is all in Japanese.

I am using Slim M, and there are 3 filter slots. I see different types of filters in the shops, I think one of types contains charcoal, but im concerned that will neutalise all my ferts.

Please let me know what I should do. Thanks

Thanks astro, yea I have seen the black sponge at NA before, but im concerned that it may not be porous enough to host enough BB. So you are using sponge for all 4 slots?

In comparison, the other types of filter packs feels more porous, like there are rocks and sand inside.

Mine is also 4 slots. But I put some filter wool where the first cartridge should be, then 2 more cartridges, then rest filled with CR. Like the whole thing packed with CR. So I essentially have mechanical filtration before bio. I hope.

Sorry guys, what is CR? And how do I put any of my own filter into the slot? Cos the slot is only 0.5th thick.

CR stands for ceramic ring. It's a form of bio filtration. You can't fit it in any of the slots, but you can just pour in the filter.

Re: GEX Slim HOF filter replacement

Thanks! Mine is size M, so only 3 slots. I think will will still fill the 3 slot with the cartridges, and then try to squeeze the CR in the space left behind the slots. I hope it fits!

Btw, any advise on how to use CR? Like how often do I wash it, and do i need to change it, and how should i treat it before usage? (sorry for the triple-barreled question!)

Re: GEX Slim HOF filter replacement

Since its a slim filter, make sure u buy the smallest sized CR. give it a few rinse to remove dust before putting them in. Washing it thereafter may cause loss of beneficial bacteria aka. BB and the biological filtration has to restart again

Re: GEX Slim HOF filter replacement

Oh i managed to stuff some CRs into my HOF with all the filter cartridges still in place. I found out that there is some empty space at the right side of the filter where the water starts. I stuffed that space with CRs,

Well for me I like the CR to be after the mechanical filtration. But thats just me. Haha if it works for you then I guess it's fine

Yea i also thought of that. But i was concerned that removing one entire cartridge will compromise the mechanical filtration cos all the water will tend to flow through the CRs which are less resistant that the cartridges.

Re: GEX Slim HOF filter replacement

Mt favourite choot pattern is to add a long round ribbed sponge roll around the water inlet of my HOFs. This way, all water entering the HOF body will be filtered and cleaned by the sponge.

The sponge needs regular cleaning to maintain good water flow. To remove the sponge for cleaning, one must use an empty cut-up plastic bottle about same size as the sponge to hold the sponge inside it before removing it from the filter inlet pipe together with the pipe section. This way, all the dirt which are accumulated on the sponge will not be spread around the tank. Make sure to add a thin piece of green kitchen scrub material to the neck of the bottle to prevent dirt leaking out of the bottle.

Re: GEX Slim HOF filter replacement

Tetrakid's sponge idea is the best method to keep the HOF clean without the need to replace the filter media in the HOF until much later.
There is a pre-filter sponge sold for GEX filters, including the Slim filters I think. That's just about the only thing you will need to clean for a long time.. and I mean really long.
