Ceramic rings should not have an effect. I suspect that somehow, soap or some other contaminant got absorbed in the rings. When you wash any equipment, rocks, wood etc. never use soap or other cleaning liquid. Just plain water.

Maybe good for you to share with us more information on your tank setup, how you change the ceramic rings, and also their current condition.
Some information that will be useful:
1. Are your ceramic rings brand new or used before?
2. How did you wash the ceramic rings?
3. What kind of filter are you using? Did you replaced your previous filter media totally with the ceramic rings?
4. How long has the tank been running?
5. What kind of fish are your keeping? How high is the bioload?
