Angel Fish + Shrimps

Hello everyone,

Has anyone had any experience in keeping angels with any type of shrimp? Love the combo (soon to set up planted tank of course), but everything I read about this points to a total annihilation of the shrimps

And if I am to keep angels in a planted tank are SAEs the best option as an algea crew?

Sorry If the questions are basic, no experience whatsoever with planted tanks..

Hi Shahim, my recent experience confirmed that this combination won't work. The cherries, malayan and yamato (yes!!! yamato shrimps!!!) that I had put in (at least 2 batches) became their snacks. My tank is moderately planted and still happened so not sure if its densely planted. I came to understand that as long as it can fit their mouths, its food.

Read that SAEs are hardworking and good for BBA when young but will tend to be lazy when they grow in size.

Any suggestions as algae eaters in an angel tank? Ottos?

You mention soon to setup planted tank. If foliage is good enough you can keep Yamato, but have to bear in mind fish will attempt to hunt anything that can be fit to it's mouth when it is hungry.

Otos are good for brown diatoms. Maybe you can specify what types of algaes that you are looking to battle, people here will be willing to help. Some algae will be good as we cannot eradicate algae all together. Also if your water parameters are good and stablised, together with the plants utlising the nutrients, the algae problems will be minimised.

my tank is coming in about 2 weeks, hope to get help then as well..

Then dont buy any algae eater yet

remember, if you have them and if there no algae yet, you need to supplement them with fish food, they also can add waste to your tank...

Angelfish may seemed to have small mouths, but they are hunters and can pick apart their preys into bite size pieces so even big shrimps like yamatos will not survive.

I kept yamatos in my planted tank with angel fish but end up all of my yamatos all gone

Yes it may seemed small but when its opened wide its big

My angelfish snacked up all 50 pieces of penguin tetra of size about 1 to 1.5cm in a mere 20mins
