I haven't start planting yet. So not CO2 at the moment, still thinking what's the best way to inject CO2. I'm going to split the CO2 via a 2-way needle valve ($30) + 1 more bubble counter ($15), sigh... broke already...

That's my camera and finger in the reflection, white color Cybershot DSC-P8. Should have covered the camera with black card.

[EDIT] OH! that ghastly face? just a reflection due to the curve of the tank corner. lol![EDIT]

Nice Layout with the Rocks! Since this is a small tank, have you considered using "Hemianthus callitrichoides" instead of hairgrass for this tank?

    Hi Bro Aeon,

Check with you, how much ADA sand require for a 2ft tank? What is the price per packet of ADA sand? I believe there is many type, e.g power sand, etc. Which is better? Any fertiliser require for the base? Is it true it create a constant PH 6- 6.5 range for ADA sand?

I been to this AquaFuana centre, there are selling a type of sand like volcano pebbles (1mm) imported from Japan, something like Dennerle gravel but according to them, no fertiliser require.

BTW, what is filter system for your 1ft tank?

    Thank you for your info.
    Cheers

I never thought of using HC as I don't really like the leaves of HC, too small for my liking lol! The small surfaces of HC will clash with the broad surface of the rocks I think...

For a 2ft tank, 1 pack of Power Sand (>$40) and 1 9l pack of Aquasoil ($37) will do. If you want extra thick sloping top layer, get another small pack of aquasoil. Initial pH will be low, 5.8-6.5 but it will rise back to normal.

    From Aqua Journal vol36:
The dip in pH is the result of absorbing soil matrix of aqua soil that produces the natural conditions as in the wild. The soil itself does not contain acidic substances. Power Sand is a pumice base sand mixed with organic substances. I think it has peat and ferts in it but is low in Phosphates.

In the beginning, nitric acid and ammonia will acidify the water, but in 1-2 weeks, nitrifying bacteria will reduce the amount of ammonia and nitric acid and the pH will rise back to normal (around 7). Then it is finely controlled with CO2 injection.

I'm interested in that volcanic pebble too, not sure if that's Fuji Sand which is used in the tanks in Nature Aquarium Books. I don't know how much one can trust their claims, if a base substrate does not contain ferts, one will have to mix in for sure.

I'm using a hang-on filter, a little too strong so I stuffed it tightly with wool and packed lots of Biohome in it to impede the flow, else my hairgrass will sway violently or even get uprooted... lol!

    Yeh 9 litres.

Power sand at the bottom, Bacter 100 (optional) in the middle, Aquasoil on top.

I think it's 100 different types of bacteria for the substrate.

Hi Aeon, must say that this is a nice layout of rocks and hairgrass. Would like to know if you would be using a filfer? What is the voltage of your light? The temp? Have you considered using seachem excel as an alternative to CO2. Hope like to set up a tank like yours. Many thanks

I'm using a Dymax hangon filter, Biohome sintered glass and filter wool as media. Biohome is really good. The water is crystal clear, Just 3 days and I'm getting near zero nitrite levels.

    Date started: 20 Mar 2004
    Tank Dimensions: W20 L20 H20 cm
    Volume: 2.1 Gal, 8.0 l
    Illumination: 9W x 1 (Philips Ecotone 6500K, 600 lumens)
Illumination time: 10 hours a day
Filtration: Dymax hang-on filter, Mika filter wool, Biohome sintered glass
Substrate: ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia on gravel on potting soil
    Fertilizers: LushGro - Aqualiquid
CO2 Supply: injection via glass atomizer, 2bps
    Air Supply: nil
    Cooling: nil
Water Change: Once a week, 1/3 tank
    Temperature: 27+-degC
    pH: 6.8
    KH: 4
