Filter recommendation

Hi all,

Newbie here, just join.
Starting my nano tank 36x22x28, this is my second tank, before i have 1 at indonesia with filter cannister jebo+ hob filter.

I am planning for low maintain tank, maybe only changing water 10% - 20 every week.
Any recomndtion for filter that not expensive? Maybe around 30-40 sgd.
planning to use gex slim hob, is that ok? Since i dont have extra space for cannister, so prefer HOB filter.
And what filter media is prefered? Please advice

Just reallize that fish and shrimp a bit exp here, hehe (compare to indonesia)

Decided to go to seaview to get GEX slim S or M.

Why gex? Compared to other brand like ocean free etc

Not sure. Seems a bit expensive. So i dont know if the price diff is justifiable by some quality.

The only thing I look for in a hang-on filter is that it must be big. It's no point to buy filters with slim and narrow compartments. I always prefer those big ones with double compartments. Mine are Oceon Free types but nowadys I don't see them on sale anywhere, but maybe they are available at Qian Hu's flag store.

The reason I like big compartments is that I can customise the configuration by increasing the size of the bio-media. I like big bio-media, the bigger the better.

But if one goes for a canister or a sump instead of HOF, one can get them with even very huge bio compartments, which are superb.

I'm using Gex Slim L on a 2ft tank. It fit just nice at the back. Get the L size, the bigger the better & put some small ceramic rings in there for better bio-filtering

What the diff the L and M except the compartment? My tank is small, scare over power, hahah

Rule of thumb, for HOFs just get the biggest size you can afford. More space for media .

For any 2-ft tank, the biggest HOF you can find is best. It is hard to get a 'over power' HOF. The most powerful being only about 6-8W. When I use them, I always use all the whole internal space for BIO-MEDIA. My mechanical filter is outside the filter itself, namely at the inlet, by using a long ribbed sponge. I clean the sponge every few days to ensure it's not too clogged. Instead of sponge, you can also use a DIY attachment using filter wool.

IMO not worth it, better go for those bigger sized canister instead. E.g. Eden 501 flow rate states 300L/h if i recall, (someone correct me on this), almost same as an Eheim 2211. In the end, it the preferences of user but i rather spend the money, give my livestock a condo to live in

But i mean conpared to big size hof, why not small size hang on canister?
Any insight? I am quite itchy to buy either one. But consider consider consider long long. Hahaha

The bigger With more ceramic rings can handle more bio-load, so can squeeze more fishes in

To TS, its a personal preference. With that size tank and a display tank, I'll choose Fluval C2 or Eheim Aqua Compact. Just my opinion. It's good enough.

Fluval C2 should be be below $50. Get it from NA or C328. For the Eheim Compact, I'm not sure of the price.

You've got a number of choices now.

For a 2 ft tank, a large -size HOF is adequate, since one can use the whole available compartment space for bio-media. The trick is to restrict the number or voume of fish.

But a most common mistake is to have too many fish in a 2ft tank. No matter how big the HOF, or how small, one must never overstock a 2 ft tank, as the volume of water is limited. even if you have the biggest canister. This is because the amount nitrate produced by by the bio-media will quickly foul up the water.

I dont plan to have a lot fish, maybe only few tetra or shrimp or some nice colourfull fish (and otto, i like this fish event not so colourfull) because i just like see the green and small colourfull fauna in my bed room, espesially after stressfull day at work, hahaha
I more concern on the landscape and refreshing view.
But now confuse with cannister or HOF. Actually my concern is the space on my table, thats why want choose slim gex. This weekend will go to seaview for hunting. Also looking for some stone and driftwood for my layout. Hahah
Already have the design on my mind, hope can realize it.

+1 on Fluval C2...

if you decided on GEX filter, I suggest that you just customize your filter
media:

mechanical filtration >> some ceramic rings >> Seachem Matrix

or just ditch the ceramic rings, go with matrix
