I went to Eco Culture at Eminent Plaze and found Azme had a very cool gadget to cool one of his tanks. He said he got the mini chiller from the States.

After seaching the Google, I found the site.

Also found another DIY on building chiller here

(I am going to the States at the end of this June. I am going to pick up one for myself. If you are interested and damn serious of getting one of the IceProbe, I may get it for you and we'll split shipping fee (local to the US), I may exclude the power supply cause they are heavy!!! PM me. I may be slow to response - only for very serious shoppers only )

    iceprobe works for small tanks.
if you have a big tank, you'll need a couple of them.
there is local made chiller which makes use of themoelectric devices. think the name is eido. check them out.

    How does this thing work?

I'm not of what is the probe part but the bottom is just a ordinary CPU HSF (heatsink fan).
    I'm back!

True. It's effective for small tanks. The spec lists up to ~20 gallons. Anything bigger than that will take long time and temperature drop may not be effective. If you need to get more than one, it's better to consider a normal chiller since the total price you pay for the IceProbe would be very close to a normal chiller.

I think the probe is made of a material such that it uses electricity to remove heat (that's the heatsink is for). There is a control/electronic part on the side which is not shown in the picture.

Those thingys work by peltier elements. Some months back, kersian offered to get a 226W peltier element for me at quite affordable price. You could try contacting him if you want to try diying. He's a member of AQ too. But bear in mind 226W is not exactly very cheap electricity wise, and you may need to get more than 1 to cool your tank down sufficiently.

    226w is about 0.3hp.
getting the peltier elements is one thing, diy the heat exchanger is another. other than no moving parts and maybe more compact, there may not be much advantages in using a thermoelectric cooler.
might be better off by getting a conventional chiller.

Why go to states to buy? I understand that it is available from a local marine shop. Search or ask in www.sgreefclub.com.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

Oh yeah, have you read the installation instructions? It involves cutting holes in the tank to install them. There's probably a less troublesome way, but I didn't look that far into it as my tanks are fairly large.

Depending on your tank size, it's better to use a chiller. How big is the current tank? For the IceProbe, you need to buy the temp controller too. A single iceprobe is not enough for a 3ft tank. Do calculate the difference.

    IceProbe

It's availabe locally, about S$230/- for the probe and if you want the Controller its another S$100/-. Available at E Aquarists' Place Address: 20 Siglap Drive, Bowmont Centre #01-05. Believe its a 230V version. For big tanks using it to supplement together with fans in proportion, should be fine. At the end of the day its the opportunity costs in relation to other alternatives. The temperature controller varies the flow of current into the device, hence regulating the cooling efficiency. A heatsink sits on the other end of the Probe to dissipitate the heat and an exhaust fan (DC) is attached to quickly remove it like your aircon compressors. As mentioned the size suits smaller tanks and the temp. ctrl. suits them. For a bigger tank I would either run it continously or set it up to a timer switch for optimum operating times. To install you don't need to drill holes all over, though the inst. says so. innovate and hook it up on the top just at the water level using a L-bracket and submerge only the probe. Alternatively, connect it to a auxillary sealed container and putting it to run in-line with your filter pumps. Just thinking out loud and sharing with you guys as I've gone through that option already. Cheers

    want to try too..

i wanted to try this diy chiller several months ago.. but decide to not do it in the end.. after several bros comment..

the peltier material cannot cool the tank enough and consumes a large amount of energy.. even if the diy cost is cheap mantaining it will cost a bomb...
